On the edge of the Arctic is a town called Raufarhöfn. Rich of history, Raufarhöfn is now a quiet little fishing village in the process of redefining itself. All basic services can be found in Raufarhöfn and this Arctic Circle village is a peaceful setting to enjoy walks, fishing or birdwatching, and offers a front-row seat for enjoying the midnight sun in summer and northern lights in winter.

On a small elevation at the edge of the village, the Arctic Henge is being constructed. A huge stone sundial with allusions to mythology and folklore, designed to interact with the unique natural light in this village at the edge of the arctic.

"A 6.5-sq-km island set some 40km off Iceland's northern coast, Grímsey is the country's northernmost inhabited point and the only sliver of Iceland located within the Arctic Circle. In many ways, this frigid far-flung isle cast off a frigid far-flung island nation is Iceland at its most elusive and extreme – and therein lies its appeal."

The inaugural flight of easyJet from Manchester to Akureyri was completed today on a windy but bright morning in North Iceland. easyJet now offers flights from both London Gatwick and Manchester Airport twice a week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Announced this spring, the Manchester flights are an addition to the London flights that were operated for the first time last winter. The flights have been well received by people from the UK and Iceland, with many connections available through the two UK airports. Tour agencies now offer easier trips to North Iceland during winter, with more time to explore and experience the region.

When the flights were announced, Ali Gayward, easyJet's UK country manager, was excited by the prospect of the new destination.

"As the only airline offering a direct connection between the UK and Northern Iceland, we are delighted to be launching a second route this winter to Akureyri from Manchester Airport, in addition to our existing route from London Gatwick, which will provide travellers in both the UK and Northern Iceland with more choice and connectivity. We are committed to supporting the development of tourism in Iceland and we look forward to welcoming more customers onboard this winter.," says Ali Gayward."

"The heart in the traffic lights have caught the attention of those visiting Akureyri and the hearts of the inhabitants.

The hearts lit up all over town as a consequence of the finance crash in Iceland in year 2008, when there was a need for some positive thinking and to put emphasis on what really matters.

Since then the red hearts in the traffic lights are visible as well as plenty of red hearts made of the flower “forget me not” decorating windows, cars and signs throughout the town." -
