AT THE EDGE OF THE ARCTIC CIRCLE, THE FJORD OF EYJAFJÖRÐUR IS AN AREA OF OUTSTANDING NATURAL BEAUTY

The fjord lies on the migratory routes of whales and countless bird species, making it the perfect place to observe wild animals in their natural habitat. Dramatic landscapes, rich history, and the wealth of species that choose to make it their home, should place the fjord on the bucket list of anyone interested in the natural world.

At the edge of the Arctic Circle, Akureyri fjord is an area of natural beauty. The fjord lies on migratory routes of whales and countless bird species.

White-beaked dolphins are very energetic and acrobatic animals. They can frequently be seen leaping out of the water and then making a huge splash landing with a powerful burst of swimming. They are natural born surfers and love to ride the pressure waves at the front of boats (called ‘bow-riding).

"We didn't have to search very long until we found our first whale a beautiful humpback, reared up out of the water and delighted us with some very wonderful surfacings. Our passengers were some of the luckiest people alive as suddenly, out of nowhere this whale suddenly leaped out of the water! Bringing its whole beautifully large body right out of the surface."

Easily identified by their enormous black and white pectoral fins, lumps of tubercles on the head / snout and their big bushy blow, the humpback whale is certainly one of natures most impressive creations. To feed, they will take in a huge gulp of water which is then filtered out through the baleen, leaving the fish behind in their mouth. This type of feeding behaviour is quite an impressive sight!

Did you know that blue whales sometimes venture into Eyjafjörður? Although they are not too common in the area, they have been known to travel into the fjord from time to time!

They're the biggest animals to have ever lived on Earth, and are so big in fact that their heart weighs about the same as a Volkswagen beetle and even a small child could crawl through its aorta!
