The midnight sun is in its peak these days. June is a great month to visit Grímsey - you'll have to sleep with your sunglasses on since the sun doesn't set at all. ☀️ ps. we miss the old church, seen in this photo, but are so thankful that a new one is being planned, see funding process at grimsey.is/kirkja

The Arctic Circle is one of the two polar circles and is special because it marks the point where on the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year, the sun will not set. Although it appears on maps as a fixed line, the circle is anything but fixed, the Arctic Circle is defined by the tilt of the Earth toward or away from the sun, which is known to fluctuate up to 2.4 degrees every 40,000 years or so.
The Orbis et Globus is a massive concrete sphere artwork that sits on the Arctic Circle and is moved slightly each year in tune with the wandering Arctic Circle and will, in time, drop off the steep cliffs as the line will leave the island for quite some time.

We are devastated, heartbroken, numb. 💔 Our precious church in Grímsey burned to the ground last night. It was one of the main characters of this small island, was built in 1867 out of driftwood and has been around for every generation since. A beautiful symbol of unification for the people so far from the mainland. We will miss her terribly 💔

Welcome to Grímsey Island

Arctic Trip meets you at a unique destination; Grimsey Island, approx 40km north of the coast of Iceland. Home of 60 people, dozens of sheep and horses and millions of birds!

Our most popular tour is the Summer Day Tour where the ferry tarrif from Dalvík is included. We will meet you in Grímsey as you arrive and show you around the island. The ferry ride can be an excitement in itself, very often dolphins, humpback whales and even blue whales are spotted and even swim with the boat. The climate can be different from what you can expect on the mainland. You’ll get to know the history of Grimsey village and its inhabitants, cross the Arctic Circle and if weather and conditions allow, see the Orbis et Globus monument that is placed on the island right under the Arctic Circle. Light refreshments are included.
