From Hjalteyri to Árskógssandur 🐋

Apart from our well known whale watching in Húsavík since 1995, we have been running whale watching tours for many years in Eyjafjörður. Before the 2023 season, we made a strategic decision to relocate from Hjalteyri to the charming village of Árskógssandur. The reason? Simply put, better whale watching! To explain a bit more: over the years we have discovered a magical whale watching triangle between Árskógssandur, Hrísey, and Grenivík, where humpback whales are often found due to the high amount of krill and small fish, the primary diet of humpback whales.

Not only did we have a 100% sighting rate of humpbacks, but most of our tours spotted the first whales shortly after we left the harbour, maximizing customer experience and minimizing fuel consumption and carbon footprint at the same time. Our first season was a great success, and we all loved it here!

We are pleased to say that we had a 99,2% success rate for marine mammal sightings in Hjalteyri during the last months. 🐋

3 humpback whales in Hjalteyri. These 2 were diving together on our tour this morning. One of them is a previously injured individual who got hurt by a boat propeller. We are happy to see the animal back in the fjord in a good condition.

We had a magnificent minke whale visiting us on our tour this morning. Shining black skin in the sun. Just beautiful to watch whilst drinking hot cocoa on a calm sea.

Did you know that the blow off a humpback whale is the warm, humid, exhaled air from their lungs? The spray we see is the water vapor that condensates in the colder air. Pretty powerful sound don’t you think?
