Láki Tours is hiring!

Are you passionate about marine wildlife and eager to share the wonders of whales with others? For our 2025 whale watching season, Láki Tours is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic guide/naturalist to join our team in Ólafsvík, Iceland, from February 15th to September 30th.

We’re searching for a candidate who:

• Has previous experience working on whale watching boats.
• Holds all required certifications, including STCW and Crowd Management.
• Works well in cold weather and rough sea conditions.
• Can confidently speak in front of a crowd with excellent English communication skills (other languages a plus).
• Is environmentally aware and passionate about marine conservation.

Láki Tours is a small-scale, responsible whale watching company operating from Ólafsvík in Snæfellsnes and Hólmavík in the Westfjords. Education and respect for nature are at the heart of what we do. We actively contribute to research initiatives and strive to minimize our impact on the whales and their environment.

Ólafsvík offers some of Iceland’s most exciting whale watching opportunities, including encounters with amazing species like orcas, s***m whales (and many others). As part of Láki Tours, you’ll work in a small team, working closely with others who share a passion for marine wildlife and conservation. Beyond the job, you’ll also have the chance to live in one of Iceland’s most stunning regions, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes.

Our 2024 whale watching season has come to an end!

What an amazing year it's been! From Ólafsvík in Snæfellsnes, we spotted eight different species, including familiar faces like orcas and s***m whales, and even rare visitors like fin and blue whales. Plus, we achieved a remarkable 100% success rate for humpback whale sightings on our tours from Hólmavík in the Westfjords—for the first time ever!

Our Holmavik season ended this year with 100% humpback sightings for the first time! We had at least one humpback on every tour. We also had sightings of Minke whales, white-beaked dolphins (particularly later in the season) and a couple of very exciting blue whale sightings.
Here is a photo taken by Judith on our very last tour where we were surrounded by over 25 humpbacks in stunning Westfjords light. And a few highlight photos from our season.
We thank all of you who came whale watching with us this year and hope we will see many of you on our tours next year from either Olafsvik or Holmavik.

26 humpback whales today in Holmavik!!
We were close to one of our records today in the Westfjords with 26 individual humpback whales photographed. We tell them apart by the patterns on the bottom of the tails. We also had white-beaked dolphins playing around with the whales.
The whales are starting to charge around the fjord in larger groups. This may in part be down to what they are eating, but can also be the hormones starting to kick in as they get closer to the winter breeding season.
We hope to run our last two tours of the season tomorrow and Tuesday weather depending.

More than twenty humpbacks seen from Holmavik today!
We are entering our last few days of whale watching tours this season from Holmavik, Westfjords but we are ending on a massive high.
With more than twenty whales seen on the last two tours, we are ending in a spectacular way. Our fjord is often at its best at this time of year and we only end due to lack of passengers rather than whales!
We have also seen white-beaked dolphins on the last two tours.
We have tours planned on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Come and see many humpbacks with the beautiful Westfjords scenery in the background and no other boats with the whales.

October has given us a windy start but looks to be calming down from Monday onward and the weather looks great this coming week.
We continue our tours from Holmavik, Westfjords and still have 100% sightings of humpback whales in 2024! We are also regularly seeing white-beaked dolphins at the moment as there is a lot of herring in the fjord.

Holmavik today had a three species tour with humpback whales, many white-beaked dolphins and a Minke whale.
With stunning weather today and the beautiful snow-capped Westfjords in the background it was an incredible end to September on the water this morning.

Humpback whales continue to be a daily sighting from Holmavik, Westfjords with seven individuals sighted on our tour today. We also had an incredible encounter today with some very curious white-beaked dolphins that hung around the boat for a while.

Tours from Holmavik in the Westfjords continue to be amazing with SO many humpback whales in the fjord deep-feeding. We had stunning weather today and were just surrounded by whale tails going down in all directions.

Amazing days continue in the Westfjords. Our tours from Holmavik are seeing many humpbacks on each tour. And yesterday passengers were also treated to a very playful group of white-beaked dolphins that were messing around with the whales, almost leaping over them! It was incredible to watch.

We can't quite believe it, but we had yet another blue whale sighting from Ólafsvík yesterday!!! Today we saw several humpback whales that were actively feeding at the surface.

Plenty of humpback whales are around Holmavik these days!
After a period of some very bad weather we hope to be back on the water regularly for the next days, until the next storm hits at least. In beautiful weather today in the Westfjords we watched a number of humpbacks milling around and diving down to feed.
