A feast for the eyes? Perhaps not. Today in Iceland we celebrate Men’s Day (Bóndadagur), the first day of the old Norse season of Þorri. During Þorri, Icelanders toast to the old gods with a midwinter feast known as Þorrablót. The season after Þorri is called Góa, and on its first day (February 23) we celebrate Women’s Day. These are unique Icelandic versions of Valentine’s Day, designed to honor the men and women in our lives 💙 Tag your favorite Viking, boyfriend, husband, son, or colleague to wish him ‘gleðilegan bóndadag’. And that’s a wrap for 2024! ✨ As well as connecting many of you with your favorite people and places, we kept busy this year with adventures including new headquarters, new fleet additions (hello Airbus!), and new airline partnerships, plus events to celebrate music, equality, and more. 2025 is looking bright, with our network continuing to grow – this year we added Lisbon and Pittsburgh, next year we’ll reach Istanbul and Nashville. That's it! Christmas is here and the Yule Lads are done with their strange antics for another year
👃 Yule Lad #11 is Gáttaþefur or Doorway-Sniffer. His strange name refers to his giant nose – he’s able to smell his favorite food (Icelandic laufabrauð, or leaf bread) from a distance, and find his way to it!
🍖 #12 is Ketkrókur, or Meat-Hook. His name could be something from a horror movie, but in fact he uses a hook to reach and steal his beloved meats, including smoked lamb (a favorite in Iceland around Christmas).
🕯️ #13 is Kertasníkir, or Candle-Beggar. Candles were made from fat in the olden times and were edible – and this poor final Lad probably ate candles because his brothers had already devoured anything else worth eating!

We’re on the home stretch with our unique band of Christmas visitors. Only 6 more hungry Yule Lads to come down the mountain.
🍨 Yule Lad #8 is Skyrgámur, or Skyr-Gobbler. If you’ve tasted Icelandic skyr you know it’s delicious – so we understand this Lad’s addiction.
🌭 #9 is Bjúgnakrækir, or Sausage-Swiper. Better keep an eye on your hot dogs and salamis, this guy is known to steal them!
🪟 #10 is Gluggagægir, or Window-Peeper. He's a curious Lad fond of peeping through windows, on the lookout for food (of course!).

We’re rounding out a successful year not just with a new Airbus fleet addition, but also a new airline partnership. Today we opened up exciting opportunities with our new partner, ITA Airways of Italy. The initial agreement will open connections via Rome, between Iceland and numerous ITA destinations including Bologna, Florence, Venice, and Naples. We look forward to expanding the partnership next year, and to welcoming codeshare passengers on board from January! 🇮🇹

More Yule Lads have been visiting Icelandic houses, depositing small gifts in the shoes of children in the lead-up to Christmas. This past days brought a trio of the 13 brothers with quirky habits and big appetites!
🍲 Yule Lad #5 is Pottaskefill, or Pot-Licker. This Lad is a prankster with a fondness for licking pots clean of any food.
🥣 #6 is Askasleikir, or Bowl-Licker, who follows the same line of thinking as Pot-Licker.
🚪 #7 is Hurðaskellir, or Door-Slammer. Finally, a brother not named after his eating habits, but instead named for his noisy prankster ways.

On the night of December 12, the first of Iceland’s 13 Yule Lads came down from the mountains to visit houses, leaving gifts (or potatoes) in the shoes of children. One Yule Lad visits each night in the lead-up to Christmas. Allow us to introduce them:
🐑 Yule Lad #1 is Stekkjarstaur, or Sheep-Cote Clod. His favorite pastime is teasing sheep.
🐄 #2 is Giljagaur, or Gully Gawk. He’s known for stealing milk from farmers, and also hides in gullies and gives people a fright when they pass by.
🥘 #3 is Stúfur, or Stubby. He’s the smallest of this strange band of 13 brothers, but his appetite is big! His favorite is stealing the crust off pans.
🥄 #4 is Þvörusleikir, or Spoon-Licker. This guy is thin and wily, with a fondness for spoons, no matter what food they’ve been used for.
You may notice a theme in our Yule Lads: they’re always hungry!

One Santa Claus isn’t enough for Icelanders. We have 13 Yule Lads! For the 13 nights before Christmas Eve, one of these troublesome brothers visits Icelandic homes to tease residents. This morning Icelandic children awoke to see the gift left behind by the first visiting Yule Lad – good children get a small gift left in their shoe, naughty children get a potato! 🎁 Meet the 13 pranksters with names such as ‘Door-Slammer’, ‘Skyr-Gobbler’ and ‘Bowl-Licker’ – we’ll be introducing them over the coming days.
