The Austvaðsholt farm, which is the heart of Hekluhestar, has the character of a family farm were the horses are the focal point of all activities. Join us on a Summer Night Ride in June, where you ride into the bright Icelandic night. If you
prefer a Day Ride, you can ride with us for one hour up to a day. If you can’t get enough of
riding you are welcome on our Highland tours – 6 and 8 day rides

. June to August we offer riding tours through lavafields and volcanic ash desert and other impressive scenery close to the famous volcano Hekla and Landmannalaugar. If you prefer hiking, make it more memorable and Hike with Packhorses

We are looking for two persons coming to work with us, preferably a couple or friends. We need one of the person taking care of our Airbnb, cleaning and maintaining houses, answering emails and more. We need the other person for training the young horses, going on 2-5 hour day rides with guests, cleaning the stables and tack. We can provide a private accommodation with a kitchen and bathroom (the house on the third picture).
The period would be from March/April to October.

This is Eldur 🤍 he’s such a sweet soul, you can just see it in his eyes 🤩 we often say that he gets his superpowers from the belly because most of the time it’s very big 🙈 He is so powerful but sweet. He has a strong mind of his own. He likes to go fast and choose his own ways. He is polite and does listen to you but he’s so smart that it’s usually best to listen to his ideas 😄 There is no horse on the farm that looooooooves treats more then him 😅

Mánadís loves cuddles and is a very warm character 🤍 she is powerful with beautiful gates, she has several siblings in the Hekluhestar herd, including Gjöf and Fengur 🥰 their mother Aldís, was for many years in the riding tours before she started to give birth to future super stars 🤩 we are so lucky having Mánadís in our herd and we are looking forward having her daughter, Gledi, with us soon 👏🏼🤍

In the 40 year old history of Hekluhestar, we have never had a thunderstorm on a riding tour but there is a first time for everything. We started out in sunshine on this ride in July 2023 but then it changed quickly and the black clouds started to approach us a bit too fast! We had never heard a thunder so load and then the lightning started to come down way to close. Of course the horses got very afraid and they started galloping. We tried to calm them down at the same time we were looking for shelter. We were so lucky because a mountain hut and a paddock was close by. We took the direction to there and waited until it was safe to go again to the mountain hut we had booked for the night. This is a day that no one in the group will ever forget, what an experience and I’m still in awe by the group of riders we had, they all stayed calm and helped out calming the horses. The horses did also so well and even they got scared they calmed down quickly.
