In the Þjórsárdalur valley of South Iceland, you'll find Stöng, the ruins of a Viking Settlement-Age farm buried beneath volcanic ash from the Hekla eruption in 1104 AD. This archaeological site, remarkably preserved under layers of ash, showcases the resourcefulness of early Icelandic settlers who thrived in a challenging environment.

Excavations have revealed the remains of a longhouse and outbuildings, offering insight into traditional Viking architecture. Nearby, the reconstructed Þjóðveldisbærinn longhouse brings history to life, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the daily life of the Viking era.

We are now having a big lighting storm. A resident of Reykjavík took this video of lightning hitting the steeple of Hallgrímskirkja. Lighting is VERY uncommon in Iceland. RÚV English

An interesting fact about the people who settled Hveragerði is that many were farmers who utilized the fertile soil created by geothermal heat to grow vegetables and other crops, making the town one of Iceland's earliest centers for greenhouse cultivation.

🚨🚨🚨 Due to the avalanche risk in the Eastfjords, a state of increased readiness has been declared. Evacuations of areas outside the avalanche protection zones in Seyðisfjörður and Neskaupstaður are ordered from 6:00 PM.

Rescue teams started going door to door in the evacuation areas to inform residents about the actions being taken. More in the story (link in comments).
