Iceland’s National Day 🇮🇸

June 17 is Iceland’s National Day, celebrated each year to mark the founding of the Republic of Iceland in 1944. The date was chosen in honor of Jón Sigurðsson, the leader of Iceland’s 19th-century independence movement, who was born on this day in 1811.
The official ceremony was held at Þingvellir, a place deeply rooted in Icelandic history and culture. Thousands of people gathered to witness the moment Iceland became a republic. Lögberg (the Law Rock), Sveinn Björnsson was elected the first president of Iceland, and important laws, including those establishing the national flag and coat of arms, were confirmed.

Today, Þingvellir is a national park and one of Iceland’s most visited destinations. It has played a key role in many of the country’s historic events. The first constitution was introduced there in 1874, the 1000th anniversary of the Alþingi was celebrated in 1930, the Christian Millennium in 2000, and major national anniversaries have brought people together at Þingvellir to mark important moments in Iceland’s story.

Today, June 17 is a national holiday filled with parades, music, speeches, and festivities across the country. While the tone of the celebration has evolved over time, the day continues to symbolize national pride, independence, and unity.

Today marks 116 years since the birth of Guðmundur Jónasson, founder of GJ Travel.
A day to remember the man who helped shape how people experience Iceland.

In this photo from his personal archive, Guðmundur stands beside one of his early highland buses (R-346). A vehicle he modified to reach Iceland’s wild interior. He was already forging the way forward.

Celebrating World Environment Day 💚 🌍

What began on hand-dug highland tracks has grown into a responsible travel company that still walks gently, with care at every turn.

Guðmundur Jónasson, our founder, was a true pioneer of Icelandic travel. He mapped routes deep into the highlands with great respect for nature. Stopping to nurture the land and leave it better than he found it. Some of those very roads are still used today.

This photo, taken in 1954 at Fjallabak in the Icelandic highlands shows the road to Eldgjá being hand-shovelled. One of many paths built with vision, respect, and pure human effort.

94 years later, GJ Travel remains proudly owned and operated by the same family.
Today, that same care lives on through our travel projects, low-emission fleet, and deep respect for the people and places we serve.

We're soaking up the sunshine Westfjords-style at the peaceful Reykjafjörður swimming pool and taking the day off to celebrate. The first day of summer is an official holiday in Iceland 🧖‍♂️🌿
