Today, we celebrate 🌍

In early May 2024, the winter accumulation on Hofsjökull glacier in Iceland was measured and found to be about 20% less than the average of the past 10 years. This is similar to the winter accumulation on other large glaciers in Iceland, such as Vatnajökull, Langjökull, and Mýrdalsjökull glacier, which are monitored by the Jarðvísindastofnun Háskólans (Institute of Earth Sciences at the University of Iceland), Landsvirkjun (National Power Company of Iceland) and Jöklarannsóknafélag Íslands Iceland Glaciological Society. Further information can be found at Veðurstofa Íslands (Icelandic Met Office).
📢 We commend their diligent efforts in monitoring and researching these vital indicators of climate change!

To keep global warming below 1.5°C this century, we must halve annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Without action, exposure to air pollution beyond safe guidelines will increase by 50% within the decade.

Since the beginning, GJ Travel has been committed to taking action. We understand that we are part of a larger, interconnected world, and we are all in this together 🤝🌿

Today was a big day for us at GJ Travel. Recently, Gusi, our old snowcat, has been pampered in our workshop and given a complete overhaul. Now he is officially retiring, laying down his skis, and will be well taken care of by the professionals at the Transportation Museum in Skógar.

Today, the family of Guðmundur Jónasson handed over the snowcat Gusi to the Skógar Museum for preservation. Gusi has a long and remarkable history, whether it involves expeditions to explore Iceland's highlands or daring rescue missions.

Guðmundur Jónasson bought the snowcat Gusi in 1952. The first tasks were emergency aid to farmers in East Iceland due to severe hardship at the time.

Gusi was well-equipped, with an insulated passenger compartment, a heater, and good space for the 12 passengers allowed to sit in the back. Guðmundur received an exemption to install a radio in Gusi, as radios were then only allowed in maritime use. Additionally, he equipped Gusi with an altimeter and compass from an airplane, and a distance meter attached to a wheel that was towed behind the snowcat during glacier trips. This made it possible to determine their location, which was considered remarkable at the time. With these additions, the snowcat adapted well to Icelandic conditions. Due to the ingenuity of the visionary Guðmundur Jónasson, Gusi quickly became popular for demanding highland and glacier projects 📡🧭❄️

Despite his age, Gusi is still powerful. He could reach speeds of 60 km/h, though the usual speed on glaciers was around 25-30 km/h. And he can still achieve that.

For example, Gusi was extensively used in the early expeditions of the Icelandic Glaciological Society.

It's fun to mention that Gusi is still in excellent condition. In good weather, he should be able to reach a speed of 60 km/h. He is equipped with an altimeter and compass from an airplane, and wheels that served as a distance meter. Not everyone ages this well, but Gusi has the fortune of becoming more beautiful with age.

The Icelandic highlands were Gusi's playground, the site of many expeditions and remarkable discoveries. He was always part of great achievements and feats of strength. It has been especially enjoyable to gather the materials that accompany this legendary family member.

It is therefore fitting that he enjoys his retirement in the embrace of the highlands at the Transportation Museum in Skógar. The museum in Skógar is also a popular destination during our tours, where visitors can appreciate Gusi's legacy and the rich history of Icelandic transportation 🥰

We just returned from a private trip to Strandir in Northwest Iceland. May is such a wonderful month to travel in Iceland, with the transition from winter to summer being especially vivid❄️☀️

This beautiful hotel in such a remote area offers a fantastic experience. Not only does it feature peaceful nature, friendly people, and charming old houses, but the region also has a fascinating history tied to the herring adventures.

In 1934, they began building a herring factory in Djúpavík, and by July 7, 1935, they started producing herring meal and oil. The fishing was excellent, and the factory thrived. It was the largest concrete building in Iceland, 90 meters long and three stories high, equipped with advanced machinery never seen before in the country. However, times changed. The herring catch peaked in 1944 and then declined rapidly. After several failed repurposing attempts, the factory closed in 1954.

Today, the factory houses the Djúpavík Exhibition, showcasing the herring era. Nobel laureate Halldór Laxness humorously wrote about these years in "God’s Saga." The factory has hosted various cultural events, including plays, dances, and a Sigur Rós concert in 2006. It’s a perfect place to visit for groups seeking unique venues 🎭🎶

Happy first day of summer🌸☀🌼
Did you know that in Iceland, today marks 'Sumardaginn fyrsti,' the official start of summer? Despite its name, it doesn't always bring warm weather, but it signals brighter days ahead. It's a time when Icelanders celebrate the transition from the long winter months to the promise of sunshine and warmth.

Speaking of Iceland, let's talk about the unique Icelandic horse, 'Íslenski hesturinn.' 🐴
Today also happens to be the International Day of the Icelandic Horse, recognizing this magnificent breed worldwide. The Icelandic horse is like no other, having been bred in isolation for over a thousand years. This isolation has kept them free from many diseases, making vaccinations unnecessary. However, it also means they can't be imported or exported easily, preserving their pure lineage.
Their history is fascinating, tracing back to the Viking age when they were essential companions for settlers in the uncharted lands. Today, they continue to captivate with their strength, endurance, and unique gaits. Here at GJ Travel, we understand the allure of these majestic creatures, which is why we include visits to Icelandic horse stables in many of our trips.

As we celebrate the beginning of summer, let's also celebrate the extraordinary Icelandic horse, a symbol of resilience and endurance🐎💚

Happy International Mother Earth Day!
Let's take a moment to appreciate the humble moss.
We often overlook its importance and the significant impact it has on our environment here in Iceland. With over 500 species, moss thrives in various locations and is thickest in Iceland's highlands. What's fascinating is that moss doesn't have roots but connects to each other in a unique way. Mother Nature designed this very delicate remarkable masterpiece for us to enjoy.
Let's respect nature and cherish its wonders.

Just returned from an unforgettable time at Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon during our Northern Lights Exploration tour along the mesmerizing Iceland South Shore. Among the many highlights of our journey, this marvel of nature is one of our stops. Situated at the head of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, within the expansive Vatnajökull National Park – home to Europe's largest glacier – this glacial lagoon is a true gem. Its beauty expands as the glacier recedes, offering a mesmerizing sight of shimmering blue icebergs drifting gracefully on the water, etching unforgettable memories. Visiting at the end of winter offers perfect timing, with long, bright days stretching into beautiful evenings including northern lights searches. Truly, this is a sight that belongs on everyone's bucket list.

We're delighted to share a touching moment from one of our recent trips 🌟

Throughout one of our educational tours, the students and guide formed a remarkable connection. To show their appreciation when departing, they gifted her a drawing portraying her as a troll woman, accompanied by a heartfelt poem.
It's moments like these that remind us of the profound impact of human connection and the beauty of shared experiences 🎨📝

Happy International Women's Day!

GJ Travel proudly stands as a founding member of the SoGreen project in Iceland. We understand the profound impact of education in shaping a sustainable future. Through our active participation in the SoGreen project, we champion girls' education—an initiative that recognizes the transformative power of educating girls on both social equality and climate change, in Zambia.

Education equips girls with knowledge, awareness of their rights, empowerment, and better health outcomes.

As advocates within the SoGreen initiative, our commitment is to promote girls' education for a future that is socially and environmentally equitable. SoGreen's groundbreaking initiative, rooted in science and human rights principles, produces the first-ever carbon credits of its kind. These projects not only reduce emissions but also enhance the resilience of vulnerable communities grappling with the impacts of the climate crisis.

Coming back from our recent Northern Lights Exploration trip filled with more than just aurora-chasing thrills! During this tour we visit the mesmerizing Deildartunguhver in Borgarfjörður - Europe's hottest spring! With water temperatures soaring to 100°C and gushing around 180 liters of hot water per second, it's an absolute natural marvel.

This is the longest hot water pipeline in the world, stretching about 64 kilometers towards the ocian. This heat source is the lifeline warming homes in this area of Iceland. This gem is nestled within Borgarfjörður's vast geothermal system, celebrated for its natural prowess. Plus, we had the pleasure of encountering Tunguskollakambur, a rare variation of a fern, thriving near the spring. Believed to be one-of-a-kind, it's a testament to Iceland's geological wonders.

You can hear the powerful spouting of the hot spring, but unfortunately, you can't smell it! The earthy, mineral-rich aroma truly adds another dimension to the experience.
