The colors in the northern lights, or aurora borealis, are primarily caused by the interaction of charged particles from the sun with atoms in Earth's atmosphere. The different colors are produced by different gases at various altitudes:

1. **Green**: The most common color, produced by oxygen molecules located about 60 miles (100 kilometers) above the earth.
2. **Red**: Produced by high-altitude oxygen, at heights of up to 200 miles (320 kilometers).
3. **Purple and Blue**: Produced by nitrogen molecules.

These variations are due to the type of gas involved and the energy of the solar particles.
