🚨 Important for Landmannalaugar Visitors 🚨

It is not recommended to visit Landmannalaugar over the next few days until conditions improve.

Additionally, we would like to remind a reservation is needed to visit Landmannalaugar. More information: ust.is/reservations

🚨 Important for Landmannalaugar Visitors 🚨

🅿 The main parking lot before the river crossing has been full and experiencing extreme chaos and traffic jams daily 🙏 Please consider taking a bus to help us reduce this issue and make your own experience better! 🚌

🚙 River crossing can be difficult for smaller jeeps due to heavy rain over the last few days 🌧️ but is passable if crossed slowly and carefully.
Conditions should improve over the next few days.

Stay safe and enjoy your visit to Landmannalaugar!

Verslumannahelgi or Commerce Day Weekend is upon us.

Commerce Day in Iceland is widely known as unofficial camping holiday. Think of it as the last hoorah before going back to the office or school when many Icelanders pack up their gear and go camping.

Notably, some shops might be closed or have different hours on Monday, 5 August because it is a public holiday.

Happy Campers will work as usual.

You can read and learn more about the Icelandic Commerce Day on our blog.

Is it safe to visit Iceland, given the recent volcanic activity? Should I cancel my travel plans? 🤔

The short answers are YES, it is safe, and NO, there's no reason to cancel your plans.

Why?

To understand better, check out the video where Dr. Matthew Roberts from the Icelandic Met Office explains why the situation in Iceland is not as dangerous as it may seem and how Iceland deals with volcanoes overall. 🤓

The more you know! 🌈

Since 2021, Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula has been experiencing volcanic eruptions. Travel to Iceland has been open and safe throughout this seismic activity...

Yet another eruption started north of Grindavík on March 16.

Although it is a spectacular sight, it is important to take all necessary precautions.

Visitors are asked to stay away from the Grindavik area and not to stop the vehicles on the Reykjanesbraut highway (no. 41), while the situation is being processed.

For now, all roads around the area have been closed while specialists assess the situation. Please respect the closures and follow the authorities' instructions.

The eruption is best viewed online on mbl.is.

For the latest information, we recommend following the national broadcaster's RUV news feed.

Volcano eruption started on Reykjanes peninsula volcano 🌋

An eruption started northeast of Sýlingarfell after 6am on Thursday.

WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR:
🔸The fissure is 3 km long and the lava flows to the west.
🔸There is no immediate threat to the town of Grindavík, the Blue lagoon and the geothermal powerplant in Svartsengi or other infrastructure.
🔸All services in Iceland are operating normally.
🔸Flights to and from Iceland are operating on schedule, and disruption to flight traffic is considered highly unlikely.

🔶Visiting the eruption site🔶

Although it is a spectacular vision it is important to take all necessary precautions. Visitors are asked to stay away from the Grindavik area and not to stop the vehicles on the Reykjanesbraut highway (no. 41), while the situation is being processed. As for now all roads around the area have been closed. Follow updated news on road closures on road.is.

🔸The eruption site is closed and therefore hiking in the area is prohibited. Please respect the closures and follow the instructions of the authorities.
🔸The eruption is best viewed online with a live feed on the media sites mbl.is and ruv.is .
🔸The highway Reykjanesbraut (no. 41) is open and operating as usual and the international airport in Keflavík is functioning normally. All flights are currently operating on schedule. The impact of volcanic eruptions tends to be limited to specific, localized areas near the eruption site. Notably, previous eruptions in the area did not impact air travel to and from the country

🦁 Going on Safari:
Join us between May and October for an epic safari adventure. The dry weather offers perfect conditions for tracking animals, and you might spot them gathering around waterholes. Don't forget to pack warm clothes for the chilly nights!

🐋 Whale Watching:
For an unforgettable experience, plan your trip between August and September. This is when the majestic whale pods migrate along the coast of Mozambique and Madagascar. Head to Hermanus, the ultimate whale-watching town, for an incredible spectacle.

🌊 Cape Town Beach Holiday:
If soaking up the sun and enjoying gorgeous beaches is your vibe, visit Cape Town between November and March. With over 2850km of coastline, there's something for every beach lover. From blue flag beaches to secluded spots in national parks, the options are endless!

Another volcano has erupted! After weeks of careful monitoring and evacuation of the town of Grindavik, an eruption finally began on December 19th.

It is located just north of Grindavik and thankfully, neither the town, local power plants, or other infrastructure appears to be at risk.

It was a fast and powerful eruption, but the intensity has been quickly decreasing. No people or livestock were injured but please stay away from the area while the situation is being assessed. The main road to Reykjavík (41) remains open but please do not stop your vehicle while driving to look at the volcano. Stay smart and happy out there.

Iceland shiws its power yet again 🌋

⚠️ Heads up! If you're planning to cruise along the beautiful ring road between Höfn and Stöðvarfjörður, keep an eye out for some incredible visitors - reindeer! 🦌🦌🦌

These majestic creatures have been spotted around the area, sometimes on the road. They can be tricky to spot in the dark 🫥 Safety first, folks! So, let's make sure to stay focused on the road ahead and zip along at the designated speed limit! 🌟

Remember, we're all about making your camper van adventure simple, easy, and fun while cherishing Iceland's beautiful nature. So, let's show some love to these roaming reindeer - a little caution goes a long way to ensure everyone explores Iceland safely! 🌲

13/11/2023

⚠️ Scientists at the Icelandic Meteorological Office have been observing increased seismic activity on the Reykjanes Peninsula that started on October 24th. There are strong indicators of a looming eruption in an area close to the town of Grindavík.

✈️ At this moment, it is not possible to conclude what effects a possible volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula might have on flight traffic to and from Iceland. It is not possible to say when an eruption might unfold or accurately pinpoint where it might surface. The location and the size of the eruption will determine what effects it will have on flight traffic.

📢 We advise everyone planning a trip to Iceland to stay informed about the most recent developments.

Happy Campers Iceland

Welcome to the official Iceland location page of Happy Campers! Check out our main page for more Happy Campers fun: http://fb.me/happycampers This page is where we share the daily life at our Keflavik, Iceland office and where you can read and write reviews about your Happy Campers experience in Iceland. Happy Campers was founded in 2009 by husband and wife Sverrir Thorsteinsson and Herdis Jonsdottir. They love everything about Iceland, travelling, and the outdoors, so the idea was born when they came up with their own ideal way to experience Iceland. The company has always focused on making things simple, easy, and fun! The camper vans are easy to drive and park, you have everything you need for cooking and sleeping, and can sleep anywhere you like. Today, Happy Campers is the oldest (most experienced sounds better, right?) camper van rental company in Iceland and has expanded its concept to South Africa. It is a family business and we would love for you to join the Happy family!
