Last Saturday, the Icelandic people elected a new president.
This time there were 12 candidates, 6 men and 6 women.
The candidate who won the election by far with 34% of the votes, was a 55-year-old woman, Halla Tomasdottir, and she thereby defeated, among others, the former Prime Minister of Iceland and the former mayor of Reykjavik.
Halla Tomasdottir has a business degree from Auburn University of Alabama.
She contributed to the development of the University of Reykjavík and was the executive director of the Chamber of Commerce for a while, but resigned her work there, to participate in the establishment of the financial company, Auður Capital.
She ran for president eight years ago and then came in second after Gudni Th. Johannesson, the outgoing president.
For the last six years, she has been the CEO of B Team, an organization founded by Richard Branson, the founder of the Virgin Group, and Jochen Zeitz, the former CEO of Puma.
Halla is the second woman to be elected president in Iceland, after Vigdis Finnbogadottir who sat for 16 years (1980–1996).
She will take over the duties of President of Iceland next August 1st, and we wish her the best of luck with her election.👏
p.s.
(It will actually be very fun for us Icelanders to listen to how people from other countries pronounce her first name as it contains a double L (haLLa) which is very difficult to pronounce for almost everyone who doesn't speak Icelandic.) 😁
