Now the volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula that started on March 16 has been going on for over a month and has become the second longest volcanic eruption in this series of seven volcanic eruptions that started in March 2021.
This eruption has behaved differently from the three that have erupted since December, which first collected magma in a magma chamber, which then filled and ended with powerful but short eruptions.
This time, it appears to have opened up for direct flow through the magma chamber and to the surface.
However, this eruption has changed quite a bit since the beginning, where at first it was a 3km long eruption, which gradually shortened into several craters, and now only one crater remains since April 5th, which is still erupting.
There has also been a change in the land that has been rising under Svartsengi/Blue Lagoon, which means that part of the magma is accumulating in the magma chamber at the same time that magma also reaches the surface.
The defensive walls at Grindavik and Svartsengi/Blue Lagoon have kept the lava flow away from these places all along.
At first, it looked like the lava flow would reach the sea, but it stopped about 250 meters from the shore.
Earthquakes are still in the area, so there is still a lot of activity.
How long this eruption lasts, no one knows, but the crater has become quite large.
But due to this accumulation of magma under Svartsengi, there is a considerable chance of a new eruption near this one, or another one around in the area, which would mean two eruptions at the same time in Iceland !!!
