Today marks the 80th anniversary of Iceland's independence! 🎉🇮🇸 On June 17th, 1944, Iceland officially became a republic, ending its union with Denmark.
June 17th was chosen to honor Jón Sigurðsson, a key figure in Iceland's independence movement, as it is his birthday. The inaugural celebration took place at Thingvellir, a site of great historical significance where the Althing, one of the world's oldest parliaments, was established in 930. This day is a proud reminder of Iceland's rich history and enduring spirit of self-governance.
Designated as Iceland's first national park in 1928, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for its universal value. For centuries, Þingvellir has held a special place in every Icelander's heart.
The exhibition, Heart of Iceland at Þingvellir is a result of collaboration between Gagarín, Gláma Kím, Visionis, Einar Á Sæmundsen, and Torfi Stefán Jónsson from Þjóðgarðurinn á Þingvöllum / Thingvellir National Park.
There, visitors are invited on a journey through history and nature. At first they get to look into a long-gone past through immersive and interactive experiences. Thereafter visitors get the opportunity to explore the nature of the area in a fun way. Before heading back out to the nature some future scenarios are drawn up so visitors are left with thought-provoking questions.
Þingvellir is a natural wonder, situated on the tectonic plate boundaries of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and also the place where Iceland became a commonwealth…
