Why would anyone spend eight days on Europe’s largest glacier?! Because they can 🤔 And they will definitely do it again. “Being able to successfully cross and conquer the biggest icecap in Europe is indescribable, it’s something that you will never forget. A life-changing experience, one where it’s you, your gear and the elements.” - Jón, our expert expedition guide.

Vatnajökull crossing is not just something you step into and have success; this expedition is something extraordinary. It’s extremely challenging BUT equally rewarding. It keeps pulling you. You need to plan, think and be critical about everything you do and bring with you.

This expedition has everything an adventurous person seeks. There are challenges on the way, and you will be tested, both physically and mentally. It could be your trip of a lifetime or preparation for something even greater! If this is the experience you seek, contact us to get more information about the next Vatnajokull Crossing.

A big congratulations to all the guides who recently passed the intensive 10-day WMI CPR and WMI Wilderness First Responder certification course.
We are proud to provide you with the highest quality training and first aid education. Since 2015, we have worked with NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) to provide the best first-aid education in Reykjavík, Iceland.
Our educational courses are designed for outdoor professionals, to provide them with the tools to make critical medical and evacuation decisions in remote locations.

This course is required for our guides who work on our longer trekking tours, and those who do Glacier Guiding 2 and Ski Guiding 2. Successful course completion earns you a WMI Adult & Child CPR certification & a WMI Wilderness First Responder certification.

For our outdoor enthusiasts and future guides, check out the courses on our website for the next available dates: https://www.mountainguides.is/courses

*These two courses are held three times a year - at the beginning of the year, in the spring and again in the fall. In addition, once a year we offer a course called WFA (Wilderness First Aid). This course is tailored to the needs of outdoorsy people and those working on day trips.

Are you dreaming of erupting geysers, natural hot springs, blue glaciers, majestic waterfalls, and the Northern Lights? Here's your opportunity!

14/10/2024

Blue ice season is calling! 🧊🔵 As summer winds down, a magical transformation occurs on the glacier: The summer's white crust gives way to the awe-inspiring hues of winter's blue ice. This phenomenon results from the compression of snow layers and the release of tiny air bubbles, rendering the ice translucent and allowing us to marvel at its brilliant shades of blue. 🌬️❄️

"If you are looking for more adventure head to Skaftafell, once its own national park but now part of the massive 5,460-square-mile Vatnajökull National Park, which contains the largest glacier in Europe. Here, you can scale 6,920-foot Hvannadalshnúkur, the highest point in the country and a serious big day of glacial travel (ski or splitboard it for a real treat). Unless you have your own gear and glacial travel training, you will want to hire guides. Call on the professional and friendly services of Icelandic Mountain Guides for the trip, which is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that provides views out across the cold North Atlantic to the south and into the vast icy interior of the island to the north. The guides can also take you on easier excursions including rambles on and hikes above Sólheimajökull, an easy-to-access, and, alas, fast-melting glacier not too far from Reykjavík. " - in

Big Kudos to our certified guides who completed and passed (with flying colours) the latest Jöklaleiðsögn (Glacier Guide) 2 and 3 - Hard Ice Guide training courses. These are strenuous, intensive 4-5 day courses, not to mention all the training prior to the exams.
💪Our guides Fie and Heini are certified as AIMG-Certified Hard Ice Guide.
💪Our guides Przemek, Stefanie, Andrés, Guðrún, Denis, and Lasse passed Jökla2 - certified as AIMG Aspirant Hard Ice Guide.

⁉️🙋‍♂️ What is Jöklaleiðsögn?
The IMG (Icelandic Mountain Guides) instructors on all our courses are among the best in the business, with a wealth of experience in different fields of guiding. IMG set the base for what is now the AIMG (Association of Icelandic Mountain Guides) standard in training, in cooperation with some of New Zealand's most experienced guides and instructors.
The main topics of hard ice guiding are assessed in simple and complex terrain. The assessment includes advanced rescue operations, route selection, risk management, crevasse rescue, ice climbing, communication with guests and group management.
The course covers both hard skills such as rescue techniques and soft skills related to risk management and customer service.

⁉️ What do these certifications mean?
👉Jökla 3: AIMG-Certified Hard Ice Guides. Hard Ice Guides are certified to observe trainees and aspirant guides as well as decide, depending on conditions client-to-guide ratios in glacier operations.
👉 Jökla 2: Guides are certified to guide on hard ice as AIMG Aspirant Hard Ice Guide under direct supervision from an AIMG-certified Hard Ice Guide.

One of the most common questions our guides get asked: "What should I wear on a glacier walk in Iceland?" Save this post for when you're packing for your Iceland trip! Once you've sorted your clothing and gear, you're ready to glacier hike Iceland!
When dressing for a glacier hike, it's important to remember that this is not the same as a leisurely sightseeing trip with short stops.

You'll need:
🥾 Sturdy boots with ankle support (we have an option to rent some)
💨 Breathable layers of clothing that you can easily add or remove depending on your body temperature.
🧥A merino wool or base layer (not cotton).
🧥A fleece or down mid-layer.
🧥Waterproof and windproof outer layers. (also available to rent)
🤠🧤 Don't forget to bring hats, gloves, and warm socks to protect your extremities, the primary source of heat loss.

And don't worry, we will provide you with the rest of the necessary safety gear!

Take a little peek at peak 2 of the 3-peak challenge in Iceland from adventurer 😉
👉 "This would be our first big climb of the trip with an elevation gain of around 1600m up the infamous Eyjafjallajökull stratovolcano, best known for erupting in 2010 and causing huge disruption to flights across Europe. These conditions really hammer home the importance of good gear, admin and confidence. Big thanks to for looking after us. " - with

Lace up your hiking boots, and don't forget to pack your sense of adventure - we're going on a trek in Fjallabak Nature Reserve! 🥾✨ Get a glimpse of the surreal Bláhnúkur & Brennisteinsalda Loop In Landmannalaugar.

The journey begins at the Landmannalaugar campsite, setting off on the striking Bláhnúkur trail, known for its distinctive dark blue (and steep) slopes. The route offers breathtaking panoramic views of the unique, expansive valley of rhyolite mountains and the lava field.
As we mentioned, it's quite steep; therefore, it is only recommended for those in good physical shape.
What goes up, must come down: There is a steep descent in the final 50 meters. Once in the riverbed, follow the markers into the lava field; then turn left onto the Laugavegur Trail and then to the Brennisteinsalda summit towards Vondugil. After the summit, you will descend and walk through the lava field to the campsite. (*Alternatively, for a shorter hike, you can skip Mt Brennisteinsalda and walk through the lava field back to the campsite.)

⛰️Length: 9.5km
🗻Total Ascent: 610 meters (2000 feet)
🥾Difficulty: Challenging / Strenuous
📆 When to Go: Mid-June through mid-September.

What about transport to Landmannalauger? The epic Highland Bus Pass gets you there hassle-free, and with some great views en route, or the chance to sleep on the way back 😉

One of our amazing guides, Fie, has just completed the world-famous Laugavegur trail, leading an inspiring All Women's group on this incredible 5-day trek. 👏🥾
💬 "I came back after guiding 5 days in the Icelandic Highlands. Days spent with laughter, outer-worldly scenery, and step after step as we conquered over 60 km. Hiking the trails is more than getting from point A to point B. It is about all the conversations, the excitement, and the late-night storytelling from 15 women from all around the world. To say I came back inspired is an understatement, and once again I am reminded of the powerful strength women hold." - Fie Øther Rasmussen

Big kudos to Fie for a successful journey, and for leading the way on a truly unforgettable experience. 🤩👏

What is it like reaching the highest point in Iceland?
This summit is a rewarding accomplishment. , expert expedition guide, took a group to summit Hvannadalshnukur!
"Although it is not a very high mountain summiting (2100m) Hvannadalshnukur Iceland’s highest mountain is still quite the challenge mentally and physically. Starting at basically sea level, you make over 2000m gain and 2000m decent in a single push with the route being about 24km in length. Then navigating through a long crevasse field before making it to the summit pyramid makes for a very exciting day with stunning views over the Vatnajòkull ice cap." - Mark
