S***m whales have the largest brain of any animal on Earth, weighing up to 8 kilograms (17 pounds). Despite its size, their brain is not just for show—it plays a crucial role in their complex social structures, echolocation abilities, and problem-solving skills. S***m whales use a sophisticated system of clicks, called codas, to communicate and navigate the deep ocean, often diving as deep as 3 kilometers (almost 2 miles) to hunt for squid!

This makes it easier for them to take turns darting through the school to catch prey. While not as structured as dolphin or orca hunting tactics, sea lions rely on a mix of teamwork and individual prowess to secure their meals. It’s a fascinating and effective strategy that showcases their intelligence and adaptability!

“Giants cruising over a reef last year in the south pacific. Seeing whales hovering over coral is such a special experience which gives an amazing sense of scale and puts things into perspective. It’s almost like a space ship floating over a city. I always wonder what the local fish think of these gods who blot out the sky.”
