For J.R.R Tolkien fans, Icelandic landscapes undoubtedly matching with his wise stories. One of the most significant authors of the 20th century, the creator of Lord of the Rings and Hobbit, Tolkien, drew inspiration from diverse dramatic nature, legendary folklore, and old Norse mythology. 😎

Around 1930, he hired his children’s nanny Arndís from the West Fjords of Iceland. So the author could listen to first-hand stories and practice some language. As an English Philologist with Old Norse as the special subject, he enjoyed the practice and brought it forward into Hobbit.

From childhood, Tolkien had been fascinated by Icelandic sagas. His favorite author was famous historian, writer, and political leader Snorry Sturlusson. One of the most extensive of his works, Poetic Edda, became a primary source of ideas for the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The main anchors of Snorra Edda, such as powerful rings and broken swords, could be visible through bright Tolkien´s recast.
Sadly, even though Tolkien always wanted to visit the mysterious Iceland, it never happened. Even so, we hope that for those traveling through its magic lands, the stories about dwarfs, elves, and wizards will become a little closer!

One of the iconic Icelandic waterfalls might not be with us these days. 🤔

It took locals much courage to defend the Gullfoss waterfall from being turned into a hydropower station. In 1907 the current owners of the land where the waterfall is located received a generous offer to sell it. Even though they rejected it, the proposal came with much pressure from public officials.

Sigríður Tómasdóttir, the daughter of the farmer who owned Gullfoss, protested against the construction of the hydro station. It took her 220 km back and forth walking to Reykjavik to deal with the lawyers. Fortunately, her shield-maiden roots and the competent lawyer Sveinn Björnsson (good karma made him later Iceland's first president) on her side helped her win the case. Now Gullfoss is state property and protected.

Have you ever been to the amazing Reynisfjara black sand beach?
According to Tripadvisor, it´s the fifth best beach in the world! Not bad for a beach where sun bathing is probably the last thing on your mind!

Last Friday, Reykjavik Sightseeing invited a group of 26 students from the Technical College in Reykjavik on a graduation tour along the South Coast.

This is a group of foreign students from the age of 16 to 18 with different backgrounds and stories.

Most of these young adults have not had the chance to see much of the beautiful country they now call home, so it was a great pleasure to have the opportunity to take them on a day tour along the amazing south coast of Iceland.

Skólavörðustígur, or the rainbow street as it is known among tourists. Painted in the colors of rainbow the street represents Iceland’s acceptance ans friendliness towards its LGBTQ community.

As a tourist you will stumble across this street when walking down from Hallgrímskirkja, or going up towards it.

It is definitely one of the most Instagramable place in Reykjavik.

The Sun Voyager is one of Reykjavik's most iconic and definitely photographed sculpture.
It is quite common amongst tourists to think this is a viking ship, but this was not the artist intention.
The Sun Voyager actually is described as being a dreamboat, an ode to the sun. The artist wanted to represent the promise of undiscovered territory, a dream of hope, progress and freedom.

Probably the most iconic building in Iceland, Hallgrímskirkja is a must visit while in Reykjavik.
Standing at 74,5m tall it is the tallest building in Reykjavik. From the observation deck at the top of Hallgrímskirkja you get the best panoramic view of the city.
The exterior was designed to resemble the basalt columns. You might find similarities between the church and Reynisfjara (The Black sand beach) and/or Svartifoss.
