Yesterday marked the day of a historic eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula. On March 19 at 20:45 an eruption started at Fagradalsfjall on the Reykjanes Peninsula, Southwest Iceland. This is the first eruption on the peninsula, and the last was some 800 years ago.

The eruption itself is in the middle of a magma d**e infusion that has been forming in the last weeks. There are two significant periods leading up to this moment. There were earthquakes which started approximately 15 months ago and then secondly the earthquakes which started again in February of this year, proving to be a lot more powerful, reaching 5+ on the richter scale.

In recent days the earthquakes had slowed down and it was assumed that there was no imminent threat of eruption. Much to the surprise of scientists and Benedikt Ófeigsson a Geophysicist who was only giving an interview on the unlikely event of an eruption on local news only hours before 😅

At this moment there is no immediate danger to inhabited areas, namely Gríndavík.

It just goes to show mother nature can not be tamed, predicted or reckoned with.
