Does not matter what season it is, one of the questions our guides hear the most is:
Why is the ice blue?
The molecules of the water are vibrating on certain frequency. When you have just a little bit of them the light goes through and the piece of ice (like in a glass of water) looks clear.
On the other hand when you have many, the light reflects from the "mass" of vibrating molecules and the glacier (or ocean) looks blue.
There can also be air bubles in the ice (2nd photo) that make the ice looking more white.
On the 3rd photo you can see that on the top edge where the ice is thinnest it looks the most white and deeper into the crevasse you go the deeper blue colour the ice gets.
This is of course put very simply, you can find many videos on YouTube explaining this phenomenon more in depth. Or you can come visit us on Icelandic glaciers and we will happily show you!
