Glacier Guides positions at Arctic Adventures:
The Glacier Guides department at Arctic Adventures is now hiring for the Fall / Winter season 2023-2024.
We are looking for glacier guides to join our team in Skaftafell and Sólheimajökull starting around the end of September.
The guide position is physically demanding! An average workday typically amounts to 10 hours, often in challenging weather conditions. As a guide, you can expect to lead multiple departures throughout the day in addition to taking care of track maintenance duties on the glacier (under supervision of a more senior guide.) Working with tourists from all over the world in a dynamic environment means no two days are the same and constantly adapting to changing conditions is therefore an integral part of the job.
Our tours cater to tourists with no previous mountaineering experience and are best described as introductory in nature. As a member of our guide team, you must have the ability to entertain as well as the ability to keep our clients safe! While full training is provided, a background in the outdoors (be it personal or professional) will greatly benefit your application. We want to know what it is about you that demonstrates you are enthusiastic about adventure. We value a history of outdoor activity, travel and adventure and our team is made up of staff from all over the world who share these passions. A degree of ropework is covered during basic training and assessment- and while we do not demand a wealth of knowledge and experience in this area, any applicable experience would benefit your application.
A permanent (both on and off shift) accommodation throughout the season, in the area, comes with the position.
To be considered for a position with us you must be able to demonstrate the criteria listed below:
- The ability to communicate clearly in English. Any additional language skills will benefit your application.
- An extensive background in outdoor activities, whether personally or professionally.
- A valid basic first aid certificate. (It can be obtained before the start of the employment).
- The ability to deal with the physically demanding nature of the role.
- A proactive attitude to learning and the mental fortitude required to work for extended periods in extremes of weather.
- You are legally entitled to live and work in Iceland (nationals of EU/EEA countries or same rights).
- A valid B license is required.
The official AIMG Jokla 1 (Hard Ice 1) course is provided and the start date will coincide with the course dates.
We offer a competitive salary plus training grants, which staff may use to fund courses such as the Wilderness First Responder.
For full-time permanent staff members, we also offer an equipment allowance to contribute towards necessary work equipment such as sunglasses and boots.
Salaries may increase over time, as staff gain more experience, skills and qualifications applicable to their work.
Progression within the company is encouraged- with additional training and development available.
Consider the following points before applying for this position:
- If you have existing commitments (travel plans, family or school obligations, work arrangements etc) within 6 months of the start date of the position that may interfere with your work in Iceland- consider applying at a later stage.
- It not possible to accommodate extensive periods of leave at any stage during peak season.
- We ask for a minimum commitment of 6 months from new recruits. Beyond 6 months we are very happy to discuss longer term employment, or returning to work with us the following season. Unfortunately we cannot accommodate bespoke length contracts (less than 6 months).
- New recruits are responsible for organizing and funding their own travel to Iceland. A designated meeting location/time will be provided to successful applicants- this is typically in the downtown Reykjavik area the day before the position start date.
- We provide a work uniform, however guides are responsible for providing their own suitable boots and a backpack. We recommend picking these up before arrival in Iceland if you do not already own these items.
For any question, doubt or more details about the job: Please get in touch by sending an email, including a CV and a cover letter to [email protected]
(Facebook messages and email sent without CVs and/or cover letter will not be considered).
Thank you!
