Every feature in the ice tells its own story, shaped by the glacier and time itself. Even though over 10% of Iceland are covered in glaciers, these massive ice fields aren’t always easy to reach. That’s why our 4x4s bring you as close as possible, right to the edge of the glacier, where the adventure really begins 🏔️⁠

From there, we have a short hike across rocky terrain before stepping onto the blue ice itself. Our route changes with the seasons, so every hike offers a new way to experience the glacier’s stunning features. Iceland is the biggest island on the midatlantic ridge and the plate boundary of the tectonic plates also lies underneath Vatnajökull 🗺️⁠
⁠
Luckily we don't need to be scared during our tours as we are still far away on our hikes from different volcanoes but we can spot the traces they leave behind. ⁠
A volcano that lies underneath water or ice produces a lot of airborne ash. The volcanic ash can travel incredible far depending on the wind and also settles down on the glacier. Some of it gets washed down towards the lowlands and some gets trapped in the ice by more snow falling and it is coming back to light in form of dark streaks in the glacier 🌋⁠

It is giving the white giant a marble effect and another reminder that we are living on the island of fire and ice 🇮🇸 ⁠

A crevasse is a deep crack or fissure that forms in the surface of a glacier. These fractures can vary in size, ranging from small, narrow openings to massive, wide chasms that can extend deep into the glacier. Crevasses are one of the hazards associated with glacier travel and exploration, as they can be hidden beneath snow bridges or surface layers so a glacier should never be explored without a trained guide and the right equipment 🇮🇸⁠
⁠
Crevasse formation occurs due to the movement and flow of the glacier. Glaciers are large masses of ice that continuously flow downhill under the influence of gravity. As they move, they encounter irregularities in the terrain, such as steep slopes or changes in topography. When the glacier flows over these uneven areas, it undergoes stress and strain, resulting in cracks or fractures on the ice surface. These fractures are the crevasses ❄️⁠
⁠
But crevasses can also be shallow and allowing us to hike through them and find some blue ice that is hidden from the sunlight. Others are deep and make for great ice climbing opportunities while some are better admired from afar 📸⁠

Anaconda Ice Cave winter 2019-20

We visited the Anaconda Ice Cave at the end of the season. While not a very blue cave, it's very interesting because of the scale and the snaking riverbeds it leaves behind as it melts.
