Interns of MareTerra - Environmental Research and Conservation season 2024
🐬 Anna is British and comes from the University of Exeter, England, and studies Biological science. She is working with GIS and wants to improve her understanding of monitoring techniques to develop new critical skills. She is interested in working with the public to spread awareness of the importance of sustainable tourism.
🐬 Eros studies Marine Biology and Ecology at La Sapienza University in Rome, Italy. Since childhood, he has always loved marine life, especially dolphins and whales. He wants to continue his studies to promote sustainable development of human activities in the marine environment. For him, scientific dissemination and raising awareness for conservation concerns are keys to achieving this goal.
🐬 Orianna is Chinese and comes from Stanford University, USA, and studies Science in Mechanical Engineering. She wants to pursue a career in combination of animal study, wildlife conservation, and engineering. She would like to find ways to integrate her knowledge in engineering to better animal welfare and contribute to our understanding of these wonderful creatures.

🇪🇺- Here is Carien, intern of ! Carien is from the Netherlands 🇳🇱 studying biology (specialisation ecology) at Wageningen University & Research. She’s most interested in behavioural ecology and dolphin acoustics and wants to learn more about sustainable tourism and the best way to promote that.
After graduation, she wants to work in the field. The internship with will be the first step towards her career as a marine biologist and conservation advocate 🐬💪🏼
🇮🇹- Ecco Carien, tirocinante di ! Carien viene dall’Olanda, studia biologia (specializzazione in ecologia) all’università di Wageningen. Ecologia comportamentale e acustica sono i suoi interessi principali e vuole imparare di più sul turismo sostenibile e il miglior modo per promuoverlo.
Dopo la laurea vuole lavorare sul campo. Il tirocinio con sarà il suo primo passo verso la cartiera di biologa marina e sostenitrice della conservazione.

🇪🇺- This morning many of our dolphins gave a huge and warm “welcome back” to Lauren! 🥰 She’s from Boston, Massachusetts (USA). She joined MareTerra - Environmental Research and Conservation in 2021 for an internship. Then Lauren decided to study Marine Biology at the University of Padua (ITA). She returned to to develop her master’s thesis project 👩🏻💻 She will analyse acoustic files for testing tools that, potentially, can reduce bottlenose dolphin interference with fishing activities.
🇮🇹- Questa mattina molti dei nostri delfini hanno dato un caloroso “bentornata” a Lauren! 🥰 Lauren viene da Boston Massachusetts (USA). Si è unita a MareTerra - Environmental Research and Conservation per un tirocinio nel 2021. Poi Lauren ha iniziato il corso di Biologia Marina all’Università di Padova ed è tornata da noi per sviluppare la tesi magistrale 👩🏻💻 Lauren analizzerà file acustici per testare strumenti che potenzialmente, potrebbero ridurre l’interazione tra i delfini e le attività di pesca.

Questa mattina abbiamo partecipato all'evento promosso da MareTerra - Environmental Research and Conservation e Area Marina Protetta Capo Caccia - Isola Piana. E' stato molto bello vedere tutti gli attori interessati dalla tematica partecipare e interve**re secondo un modello di gestione partecipata. Il nostro augurio è che sia il primo di tanti a ve**re 🐬🐟🐙🦐

Domani 15 ottobre si terrà un evento organizzato da MareTerra - Environmental Research and Conservation e Area Marina Protetta Capo Caccia - Isola Piana. Si presentano i risultati di uno studio che ha la finalità di promuovere la pesca sostenibile e favorire la conservazione degli ecosistemi marini. L'iniziativa è finanziata da SPA RAC e ricade all'interno di un più ampio progetto per migliorare la gestione delle aree protette attraverso la collaborazione tra le ASPIM, ovvero le Aree Specialmente Protette di Interesse Mediterraneo ( ) con il supporto del Ministero dell'Ambiente e della Sicurezza Energetica
Tutto è pronto per la giornata di domani “Valorizzazione e prospettive della pesca nel Golfo di Alghero”(9.30 presso Casa Gioiosa).
Interveranno il Direttore dell’Area Marina Protetta Capo Caccia - Isola Piana Mariano Mariani, la Dott.ssa Gabriella La Manna (MareTerra - Environmental Research and Conservatione e UNISS), il Dott. Daniele Grech Santiago (IMC), la Prof.ssa Giulia Ceccherelli (UNISS), il Dott. Nicola Fois (AGRIS), la Dott.ssa Antonella Derriu e la Dott.ssa Donatella Palomba (AMP). Exciting moments together with bottlenose dolphins! However, it is fair to explain that during observations, the animals do not habitually interact positively with the boat for as long as in this video. It depends on the group composition, whether or not they were engaged in other relevant activities or simply on their desire. The key is to behave responsibly, letting them decide what will happen and not force or chase them! 🐬🥰

Here is the story of Esther who has had a huge dream since she was a child: to see dolphins! Esther was hit by a car when she was young. Many operations followed and she still suffers from back pain today. Over time it got worse and worse, so unfortunately she can no longer do her dream job as a farmer. In her life, she also took care of many foster children and was always there for others. Thanks to the request of her big sister Ruth to the Swiss TV SRF we managed together to make real this dream for her! Here is how it was end 😉
Oggi si è conclusa l’avventura insieme alla troupe canadese. Un grazie di cuore a Emilie, Sacha, Lynn, ai due attori super simpatici Patrice Lecuyer e Gaston Lepage. Un grazie di cuore anche a tutta l’organizzazione e il supporto di Luigi e Jean Luc Madinier di Sardaigne en Liberté.
Finalmente il mare ci ha dato la possibilità di uscire insieme a due famiglie dalla Polonia 🇵🇱 e una simpatica coppia austriaca 🇦🇹. Per la gioia dei bambini e degli adulti (che ci hanno detto di essersi divertiti più dei bambini…e questo lo sappiamo molto bene 😉) abbiamo passato una mezz’ora in piacevole compagnia di 4 delfini. Siamo stati insieme ad una mamma col suo cucciolo, accompagnati da un adulto e un giovane. Il giovane si è avvicinato più volte alla nostra imbarcazione e a proposito di questo vi ricordiamo che è sempre importante avere un approccio dolce e rispettoso, lasciando decidere ai delfini se e come avvicinarsi. La stagione è iniziata!!! Vi aspettiamo a bordo 🐬🐬🐬🐬
🇮🇹 - Ieri mattina abbiamo incontrato un gruppo di 10 tursiopi con femmine e i loro cuccioli 🥰. Ci siamo avvicinati lentamente a distanza di sicurezza. Abbiamo fermato la barca e ad uno dei cuccioli è stato concesso di avvicinarsi a noi e dare libero sfogo alla sua curiosità. Per più di 2 minuti il cucciolo si è mosso in ogni direzione a prua della barca osservandoci da ogni angolazione possibile 😆, inutile dirlo, per la gioia 🤩 di adulti e bambini presenti a bordo. *** 🇬🇧 - Yesterday morning we met a group of 10 bottlenose dolphins with females and their cubs 🥰. We slowly approached them at a safe distance. We stopped the boat and one of the calves was allowed to approach us and give free rein to his/her curiosity. For more than 2 minutes the calf moved in every direction at the bow of the boat, observing us from every possible angle 😆, needless to say, to the delight 🤩 of adults and children on board.

Un’emozione indescrivibile. *** 🇬🇧 - Yesterday a beautiful sighting of fin whale 🐋 during our excursions. We admired this wonderful whale together with our lucky guests on board for about 30 minutes and then let it continue its journey alone.
