Thank you to our talented artist and guest Terri Anne Thompson for the detailed description of our day in Matera.

Today we left Puglia and took an excursion to the intriguing city of Matera in the neighboring region of Basilicata. Amy, our fabulous guide, gave us a tour of this historic town, documented as one of the world’s oldest (continuously inhabited for at least 8,500 years, with some parts dating back as far as Palaeolithic times more than 30,000 years). Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1993, it is a beguiling town of cave churches (some 150) and abandoned hovels and houses of limestone piled on top of each other. Up until the 1950s, the honeycomb of houses and caves known as Sassi (rocks) were home to peasants who lived in appalling conditions with an average of six children living together with their animals in a single room. Embarrassed by the “City of Shame,” the Italian government moved out 15,000 residents into more modern quarters from 1953-1968. The Biblical landscapes around Matera made it the perfect backdrop for several films, including The Passion of The Christ. The James Bond movie, No Time To Die, was also filmed here.

We had a private tour of the property, enjoyed a beautiful tasting menu at Michelin Star Due Camini 🌟 and invited into the kitchen to meet Chef Domenico Schignano and Master Pastry Chef Titziano Mita 👨🏼‍🍳👨🏼‍🍳 Fabulous and Grazie a tutti!
We were the last service before they shut down to prepare for the G7 summit. Good thing we were there to do a pre-check 😁

If trees could talk, image what these ancient olive trees have to say! The beautiful weather continues to follow us as we enjoyed an introduction to the world of olive trees and olive oil at Masseria Brancati. Some of these trees are thousands of years old and national monuments 🇮🇹🌳
Of course, a picnic lunch under these ancient wonders was must-do 🧺🌿☀️

Our Douro Valley experience was perfectly concluded with an alfresco lunch, a boat ride on a Rabelo along the Douro river, and visits to stunning vineyards, including one that is French-owned with impressive architecture and another that was founded by Johnny Graham and known for it’s Churchill's Port 🍷🍇🇵🇹 Obrigada to !
