Positano. A name, a destiny. A toponym derived, according to the historian Matteo della Corte, from Posides, a slave released by the Roman emperor Claudius. Posides, enriched by means of his job as a builder as well as for some battle fought on behalf of Claudius, would have built his villa in Positano. The name Positano therefore, would derive from a rich freedman of the imperial roman age.

Positano. Un nome, un destino. Un toponimo derivato, secondo lo storico Matteo della Corte, da Posides, schiavo liberato dall'imperatore romano Claudio. Posides, arricchito per il suo lavoro di costruttore oltre che per alcune battaglie combattute per conto di Claudio, avrebbe costruito la sua villa a Positano. Il nome Positano, quindi, deriverebbe da un ricco liberto di età imperiale.

[…] The current Li Galli, recalling directly the image of the siren hybrid-winged, would be the modern reflection of the ancient Seirenes. […] So Seirenoussai, the promontory, recalls the life of the sirens, Seirenes, the islets, their destiny of stone''.
