🕰️ The Revolution of Care Begins with Time
What if reimagining work started by revaluing care... and time?

In a compelling interview by Luca Iacovone, Professor Jennifer Nedelsky (University of Toronto) reflects on why care must move to the center of our economies — and how working less can become the path to a more humane, democratic, and sustainable society.

💬 “We cannot have a humane life when care is denigrated and work is largely oppressive and underpaid.”

🧭 Notes on Part-Time for All: A Care Manifesto
by Ida Marie Munck & Paolo Santori

📚 Just published in the International Review of Economics, Journal of Civil Economy (Springer Nature Link – April 5, 2025), this new article builds on the vision of Jennifer Nedelsky and Tom Malleson: a world where everyone works part-time and cares part-time.

What does it mean to restructure work around care — including self-care and spirituality? This paper offers a powerful contribution to the ongoing dialogue on care, justice, and human flourishing.

🕒 What would you do with 12 extra hours each week?
Would you care for your aging parents? Tend a garden with your neighborhood? Teach, listen, walk alongside someone?

Jennifer Nedelsky says it’s not a dream—it’s a real possibility.
If we choose it.

Work less, live better.
Care not just as a personal gesture, but as a shared responsibility.

From her book Part-Time for All to the global village “Work and Care” of The Economy of Francesco, Nedelsky has inspired hundreds of young people to rethink the way we relate to time, labor, and each other.

And now she’s coming back to Italy.

🌍 Work and Care is one of the 12 thematic villages of The Economy of Francesco. It brings together young people from all over the world to rethink the future of work, placing care at the center—as a value, a relationship, and a shared responsibility.

One of the village’s earliest supporters is Jennifer Nedelsky, political philosopher and Professor Emerita at the University of Toronto. She has been part of the EoF journey since its beginnings. In her book Part-Time for All: A Care Manifesto, co-authored with Tom Malleson, she proposes a radical idea: no more than 30 hours of paid work per week, and at least 12 hours dedicated to unpaid care. A concrete vision to face inequality, the care crisis, and our deep need for time and connection.

Whether you've been part of the Work and Care village for years or are just now exploring these themes, the upcoming workshop is an invitation not to miss:

🌍 Work and Care è uno dei 12 villaggi tematici di The Economy of Francesco.

About - THE ECONOMY OF FRANCESCO: YOUNG PEOPLE, A COMMITMENT, THE FUTURE

POPE FRANCIS INVITES YOUNG ECONOMISTS AND ENTREPRENEURS OF THE WORLD TO ASSISI TO CHANGE ECONOMY AS IT IS TODAY AND GIVE A SOUL TO THAT OF THE FUTURE

From 19 to 21 November 2020 the city of Assisi will host The Economy of Francesco, a three-day event entirely dedicated to young economists from all over the world, invited directly by Pope Francis to start a process of global change so that the economy of today and tomorrow be fairer, inclusive and sustainable. The organizing committee includes the Diocese of Assisi, Assisi City Council, the Seraphic Institute of Assisi and the Economy of Communion.

From 26 to 28 March 2020 the city of Assisi will host The Economy of Francesco, an international event aimed at young economists, entrepreneurs and change-makers engaged in thinking and practicing a different type of economy. The invitation to participate has come directly from Pope Francis, who has today issued a letter in which he invites to the City of St. Francis, which is symbol of humanism and fraternity, young economists and entrepreneurs from all over the world, without distinctions of creed or nationality, to initiate with them a process of global change so that today's and tomorrow's economy is fairer, inclusive and sustainable, without leaving anyone behind. The event is organized by a committee composed of the Diocese of Assisi, Assisi City Council, the Seraphic Institute of Assisi and the Economy of Communion.

The most complex problems in today's world, from safeguarding the environment to justice for the poor, need courageous commitment to rethink the economic paradigms of our time. In the Encyclical Letter Laudato si', the Holy Father recalled that everything is intimately connected and that the Earth is our "common home", and therefore launched an appeal to defend it and all of humanity that inhabits the Earth. He warned us against the careless exploitation of resources and short-sighted policies that look to immediate success without prospects for the long-term. Starting from the example of St. Francis, it is therefore necessary to rebuild a new integral ecology, one that is inseparable from the concept of the common good, which must be implemented through choices based on solidarity and the "preferential option for the poor" starting "from solving the structural problems of the world economy."
