Once at the top, we stop, regroup, take a break for lunch and then from there just the difficult descent along the shores of the lake and the difficulties are over: up to Menaggio we pedal in absolute calm, there is no more gradient and we just have to be careful that the view of the lake does not distract us too much from riding.

There is just one spot in the world where you can see bicycles that have been used by Bartali, Coppi and Merckx in their Tour de France victories, the special bike used by Moser for his game-changer hour record and several maglie rosa, maillot jaune and rainbow jersey: this is the Museo del Ciclismo over the Passo del Ghisallo! The Pass Ghisallo is one of the best known places for cyclists of all ages and categories, competitive or not, as it was historically featured in Giro d’Italia and Giro di Lombardia. It's A nice ride from Bergamo or Milan of about 60 km will take you here. Once arrived you can climb up to the Pass and pay a visit at the museum, a real gem for every cycling enthusiast.

The ride begins right from the landing stage of the famous village: and the start is one that can stun you, the fearsome one-two of Ghisallo and Muro di Sormano immediately awaits us. If Ghisallo is, all things considered, a rideable climb with a few double-digit sections, the Muro di Sormano, on the other hand, is a 2.3-kilometre rock climb with monstrous gradients. It won't be easy to ride it in its entirety without setting foot on the ground, in fact the gradient is often over 20% and if we stop, restarting is very complicated

POST 015

The climb is in the undergrowth at the beginning, only the last few kilometers are in the rocks. At the pass we stop to look out over a splendid panorama like a balcony over the whole of Lake Como, there is hardly another place like this that can be reached by road bike.

From the pass there will be a short, technical descent of a few kilometers to descend into Valsassina. There another pleasant cycle path along the stream winds its way through pastures and woods, before attacking the splendid Esine Lario Pass.

After the descent from the pass we cross the climb that connects Cencenighe to San Pellegrino. As soon as the road begins to rise, we immediately have 2 km with gradients of over 12%. After that the remaining 4km are 'easier' with an average gradient of 8%. Over the pass the sight of the lovely church will not be a mirage but a sign that for today climbing is over. Ahead, only one long downhill left up to Moena and after that we hit back home following the same road we rode in the morning.

We are still in the Dolomites and exactly like the name of the pass itself evokes, the landscapes and nature are pretty different: it’s a green and wooded area as it’s all grass and flowers all around with less rocks all around. We couldn't figure out a better spot while sipping our last cappuccinos: The pass is beautifully set between the gentle pastures of Luson to the north and the meadows of Pütia, with the steep walls of the mountain to the south. From here we have access to one of the most precious natural environments in the Dolomites.

Once there, it’s up and down to Passo Gardena. What we get after the pass it’s a nice 26km downhill through Alta Badia valley before we take on the very nice Passo delle Erbe climb, a beauty that a lot of time is neglected for mere logistic reasons. It's for those in the know. Even the Giro only rode 3 times up to this majestic climb. The American Andrew Hampsten was the first at the Passo delle Erbe KOM on the 13th stage at the 1993 Giro d'Italia

As keen cyclists we can never get enough of scenic roads and endless climbs. Just like at the Giro where the last stages are always the most treacherous, on the last day we have set aside another 95 km, three passes, but above all the maximum elevation gain: today we are climbing 2500 meters. As soon as we leave our hotel we go up the 11.7 km uphill to Passo Sella from the south road.

We can split this climb in two section: the first is about 10k to the Alpine Lake of Paneveggio where slopes flatten a bit following the shore of the lake, afterwards it is another 9 km to Passo Rolle. This second split is steeper with inclines peaking the 10%. If the punchy climb erodes our legs our eyes will be paid back by the stunning view of another iconic Dolomite peak: the Pale di San Martino.

Sellaronda classic loop. Can you dream of anything better than this ride? The circular route, amidst fascinating natural landscapes, leads through some of the most attractive roads and well-known Dolomite passes and you know whats’s best of it: it’s a 64 km ride with no flat: either you go up or you go down. There are no other ways and that’s exactly what the Italian amateur loves about it. This stunning loop includes: Passo Pordoi (2239m) Campolongo (1875m), Gardena (2121m) and Passo Sella (2240m).

Ride like an Italian, eat like a Ladin.
This old recipe of ladin heritage is the perfect way to refill the tank after a day up and down in the Dolomites. As many dishes from the past they were intended as a great way to give new life to leftovers, in particular bread, not pleasant to eat after a few days. Knodels are the confirmation that recycling is good.
Knodels are an iconic and recognizable dish as 4-6 cm balls made of stale bread cubes, milk and eggs. Don’t forget a big beer and the day after your legs will ba as brand-new!.

At a certain time of the day you might see the peaks around you getting pink. No, it’s not because you’ve burned out, it’s a natural phenomenon called “enrosadira”, which literally means “turning pink”, derives from the Ladin word rosadura or enrosadira. This phenomenon is most clearly visible on summer evenings, when the air is particularly clear and the twilight is longest and hue taken by the mountain peaks varies from pink to orange to purple. This phenomen is enhanced by the reflectivity of the pale Dolomites rock faces and it’s a perfect pic to collect your likes on the socials.

With no shadow of a doubt the Three Peaks of Lavaredo are a must-ride in the Dolomites, representing one of the most most important natural wonders in the world of mountaineering. They witnessed epic days in the history of cycling: the Giro d’Italia riders rode up on their steep slopes on three-speed bikes in the 1930s, and Vincenzo Nibali won a stage under a spectacular snow storm in 2013.
Three Peaks separate italian from German speaking regions and still mark the border between areas of Italy where cappuccino is served at breakfast and those where it’s served in the afternoon.

Giau is an Hors Catégorie climb, one of those rare uphill that can change the whole course of a stage race. It's, in fact, a 10.2 km and 9.1% gradient ascent, ending at 2236m ASL. Certainly one of those trophies that a dedicated cyclist should take home! Once on top, we enjoy the awesome views and the lovely mountain hut and take a break for a well-earned cappuccino and snacks. It's going to be for sure a cappuccino with a view: a 360-degree picture that includes the twin peaks of Nuvolau and Averau, both above 2600 meters

Fedaia is one of those iconic climbs of the Dolomites either for the steepness of the road or the beauty of the landscapes we are surrounded by. Ascent is 12.8km long at 8% gradient. But what makes this climb so hard is its straight part - right in the middle - known as Malga Ciapela, a section almost three kilometres long, averaging 12% incline, but with many meters at 15%. Malga Ciapela is a nightmare among Italian amateurs cyclists and since 2022 Giro d'Italia for Carapaz too: that's exactly where the Australian Jay Hindely dropped the at-the-time race leader Richard Carapaz to go get the Maglia Rosa Jersey and become the first Aussie to win the Giro.

The Dolomites are the beating heart of cycling passion. The history of cycling has been written on these roads that wind between white rocks, in the midst of new ones, as if suspended in space. To cycle over these passes is to cycle through the history of the sport we love.

The strongest impressions I had as a child belongs to the land where I was born, the valley of Belluno, the wild mountains that surround it and the nearby Dolomites. Dino Buzzati, italian author who covered 1949 Giro d’italia for Corriere della Sera.

Riding through these mountains is challenging as the cycling environment is very typical: continuous climbs, consistently steep: you'll often face a gain of 1000m every 45km ridden and it's rare to face climbs at less than 8% incline. Being slow here is fantastic as it gives more time to enjoy the views. Dolomites are pure fun for every avid cyclist

Epic as riding in the Dolomites can be, the place is just as serene. Stop beside the road to catch your breath only to lose it again. Gaze out at pink limestone peaks and sun-gilded buttes, at verdant slopes tumbling to a crevice valley where, amid clustered rooftops, a well-earned Forst beer at a local brewery and plate of spaetzle await.
