Around this time of the year of there’s a traditional peasant wedding taking place at the village Kastelruth, located near the well known Dolomite plateau Seiser Alm/Alpe di Siusi.

This year it’ll occur on the 19th of January!
The wedding itself is a staged performance, which gives us an understanding of how peasant weddings were celebrated in the 19th century.🤵🏼👰🏼‍♀️
In the past they usually took place in the cold season, since people used to work on the fields the rest of the year.
During the procession the participants also show off the so-called Trachten (traditional costumes) of the region.

Men are typically dressed with leather trousers (Lederhosen) and a vest, while women usually wear a Dirndl, which is a particular dress, with a blouse and an apron.

Before witnessing the wedding procession you can also pay a visit to the museum of the Trachten for free!
Ultimately we have the wedding feast called Hoazetkuchl, where visitors can taste different local dishes and desserts.

This event is considered one of the biggest displays of regional costumes of Southtyrol, so don’t miss out on it!

The annual ice games have officially begun today in Klausberg, Ahrntal🧊(valley near the Austrian border), where international professionals compete against each other at round 2500m altitude.

Their goal is to shape enormous blocks of ice into astonishing sculptures.⚒️
During the next four days the artists will have time to work on their creations, in the meantime you can observe them daily from 8.30 to 16.00pm.
It’s an impressive undertaking, since the sculptures are basically full-size or even bigger and on top of that, they remain intact approximately until March, depending on the weather.

This photo shows the sculpture, which won last year’s Ice games, the theme was “Schach” (chess), while this year’s theme is “Gaming”.🎮

Another important character of the Christmas celebrations in South Tyrol by the Italian speaking population is the Befana.
She’s an elderly woman usually depicted with a long nose and riding a broomstick🧙🏻‍♀️
Her visit takes place during the night from the 5th to the 6th of January marking the end of the Christmas celebrations. The 6th of January is also known as Epiphany and the visit of the Three Kings to Jesus, as described in our previous post 🔙🔙
Custom is to leave out the stockings for her to fill it with toys and candy for the well behaved kids and coal for the naughty ones.

Originally she was seen as a symbol of the year that had passed, that’s the reason why she is also portrayed as old, while her gifts stand for prosperity that awaits in the New Year.🎆
In the Christian tradition she is linked to the Three Kings, to whom she gave directions to get to Jesus’ crib. The Kings invited her to come along, but she refused, regretting later this decision.
Eventually she prepared a bag full of sweets knocking on every door gifting the kids with candy, hoping that one of them would be Jesus.

The festive period around Christmas is coming to an end, which is marked by the celebration of the Three Kings Day on the 6th of January, also known as Epiphany (meaning appearance or manifestation).

The name refers to the appearance of the Three Kings that came in order to gift the newborn Jesus with gold, myrrh and frankincense.
After the Bible these three wise men, also called Magi, were guided by the Star of Bethlehem ⭐️ to the crib where Jesus was born. Later they became known in the Christian tradition as Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar.

On this day it’s typical for children to dress up as the Three Kings and go from door to door to sing carols for the families. They’re known as Sternsinger (Star Singing) and they usually collect money for charities.
After the singing they also do a house blessing where they write C+M+B with chalk on the upper part of the door, which stands for Christus mansionem benedicat (may Christ bless this house) or also for the names of the Three Kings. 🤴🏼🤴🏻🤴🏿

Happy New Year!
Particularly between Christmas and the 6th of January (Feast of Epiphany) we have the so-called Rauchnächte which can be translated to Smoky nights. This tradition dates back centuries and has its roots in local folklore, but was later also tied to Christian traditions.
In order to welcome the New Year and protect the house from evil spirits, incense or aromatic herbs are burned inside the house. To spread the smoke, a container similar to a pan is carried around the house by the family.
The smoke is supposed to have a cleansing effect and bless the household and its members.
This custom is primarily common in rural areas and nowadays mostly centered around the New Year.

New Years Eve is up ahead and maybe you’ve already begun with dinner preparations🎇
Also known for its long preparation time is cotechino, since it has to be boiled for a few hours before being ready to eat.
Cotechino is a specific type of sausage mostly made out of pork meat and fat.

By eating cotechino italians are also wishing for prosperity in the year to come. It’s always
accompanied by lentils and it also portrays a rich meal, which origin dates back to the 16th Century. Lentils were always seen as a symbol of fortune and prosperity, for example in Ancient Rome they were served to gods in order to receive blessings.

Nowadays it’s mostly consumed in the regions of Northern Italy among them Emilia Romagna, Lombardia and Trentino Alto Adige.

Merry Christmas! 🎄 🎁
After having a huge lunch with the family and tasting a large selection of different dishes you can’t finish without eating pandoro as dessert.
Paired with a glass of sparkling vine, preferably Prosecco, this sweet treat is recognizable by its star shape.
Some might mistake it for a panettone (a similar Christmas desert) but the main difference is the fact, that pandoro doesn’t contain any candied fruits or raisins!
To someone who has never tasted it, you could describe it as a sweet bread loaf which tastes very buttery and sweet. That’s also where the name comes from, because it literally means golden bread!🍞
Pandoro is originally from Verona (known as the city where Romeo and Juliet are from) where the original recipe was reworked by Domenico Melegatti, particularly the shape as we know it today.
It’s common to gift a pandoro during the holidays, since it’s consumed throughout the entire Christmas season, especially for breakfast!🧇

Since it’s nearly Christmas Eve we can’t help to mention a very typical holiday treat! Zelten is consumed around Christmas mostly in alpine regions. The word Zelten is believed to come from the German word “selten” meaning rare. Probably because of the ingredients that were used, since they were all considered to be expensive, including dried fruits, nuts, figs and almonds.
Others think that the name comes from a cake named “Celteno” that was first mentioned in a recipe, found in a small town close to Lake Garda called Rovereto in the 1700s.
On the other hand the tradition also says that Zelten was made with the help of the whole family to share during the festive time. Small pieces of the cake were then gifted to the future husbands of the daughters. You may wonder why, but you should know that the cake itself was dedicated to the saint of love San Tommaso! So it was supposed to help in the search of love ❤️

It’s cookie- baking season🍪 and one of the most traditional holiday cookies in our Region, along Lebkuchen (gingerbread cookies) and Vanillekipferl (vanilla crescent), are Spitzbuben.
The name translates to mischievous boys, which probably refers to the fact that the jam peeks out of the cookie and some cookies often even represent a smiley face. The cookie itself tastes buttery and sweet because of the jam, which is typically apricot or strawberry jam. At the end they’re then topped off with powdered sugar and served.
Spitzbuben became popular in the 19th Century originating from southern Germany or Austria. To this day they’re a festive cookie very common among German-speaking countries, the shape can vary from stars, hearts or just classic round circles. Nowadays similar cookies can be found in Hungary or the Czech Republic as well, and they’re even closely related to the Austrian Linzer cookies!

What better way to start off the week by tasting a warm and delicious Strauben?
The recipe of this sweet deep fried dough dates back to the Middle Ages, mainly because it’s made with a few simple ingredients, that were locally available at the time.
It’s characteristic especially for the fall and winter season in South Tyrol and can be found at harvest events, in the carnival season or at the Christmas market.
Served with powdered sugar, jam or apple sauce it’s definitely a unique pastry that reflects the regions traditions!

In the Night from the 12th to the 13th of December the local folklore says that Santa Lucia (a Christian martyr) will visit the homes of children, who left plates with milk and cookies out beforehand, in order to receive small gifts.
Her role is similar to the one of St. Nicholas, but she is more popular among the Italian-speaking population, also in the region of Trentino.

Her name comes from the latin word lux meaning light, which is the central theme around this festive day and usually people decorate their house with candles and lights.
Lucia was a young Sicilian woman coming from a wealthy family. After having a vision of Saint Agata she decided to donate all her possessions and dedicate her life to Christianity. Afterwards her suitor, enraged by her decision, sentenced her to death for her Christian faith and she was killed by the Roman authorities.

What’s better than to taste a hot Glühwein (mulled wine) in this cold weather?
Normally you can find it at the Christmas market, where it’s mostly made of local wines, for example Lagrein or Schiava. The wine itself is then mixed with different spices: cinnamon, dried orange peels, star anise, sugar and cloves, which make it taste in a very distinctive and intense way.
Recipes may vary slightly from vendor to vendor, some of them even have their own unique recipe. Lastly it is then served in colorful ceramic mugs, which can be kept as souvenirs against the previously paid pawn or returned.
Traditionally it was also believed that mulled wine would protect against colds!
During our Bolzano Street Food Tour a must is a stop at the Christmas Market for a Glühwein tasting. Come and join the fun and dive into the festive atmosphere, mingling with locals and newly made friends!
