Il Poggio alle Ville

Il Poggio alle Ville A thoughtful restoration. Outside geraniums, roses and shady spots. Inside, beams and terracotta. Gr The moment you arrive you know you've chosen well.

Beautiful vistas of fields unfold, until a small hamlet comes into view: welcome to the agriturismo Il Poggio alle Ville. There's an old cart full of bright geraniums under the trees, roses clambering stone walls and a central green on which guests relax in sun or shade. It is an excellent and thoughtful restoration: the reception in the haybarn, the apartments in the outbuildings, also a consecra

ted chapel. Step in to find venerable old beams and terracotta floors, white arches and narrow steps, floral bedcovers and snowy towels, perhaps an iron bedstead, a Tuscan fireplace. The friendly owners always look after you (and bottle the tomatoes and make the jams & honey, all for sale along with the extravirgin olive oil). A perfect place for sociable famiglie with kids - football field, ping-pong, big pool. A short drive up the hill is a huge old stone villa for 16, blessed with views and an elegant pool. Heaps of comfort and charm.

in Raffaele's grandfather love letters to his future wife Anita.
One postcard of the charming church in in where the family 's main villa was with just one, rather unromantic word written: Saluti.
Another short note/letter saying:
"I must go in Mugello this evening: and anyway it is better that for a while I stay away in... solitude."

This year we will commemorate nonno Franco' s premature death during the 1944 bombings in Mugello when the Allied Forces were gradually liberating Italy. Our intention is also to publish these touching letters that Ioana is painstakingly transcribing as part of her extensive research.
Franco and Anita met at the beginning of the First World War and life separated them nearly at the end of the Second World War.

From Coffee to CBD oil

Our treasure hunt through folders with old documents brought to light two interesting documents regarding the business Raffaele's great-great-grandfather conducted in Genoa and London (together with his brother). We knew that they imported in Europe goods from the Middle East, and now we have just discovered a 20 pages "Remarks on Mocha" dated March 1836.
Mocha, a city on the shores of the Red Sea, is nowadays in Yemen but in the early 19th century it was under the Turkish Government.
The paper is a detailed account of the city, people, traditions, climate, trade and also contains the incredibile description of the 5 main merchants :-)
The world of Coffee is the focus of the report, probably commissioned or anyway paid for by the Edlmanns - who also had an interest in the plantations in Santo Domingo as other papers show.

200 years later we produce & sell organic extravirgin olive oil and the "most exotic" new product .

We have started transcribing the handwritten report and hopefully, who knows, work out a small project with Ditta Artigianale?! ☕️

On we pay tribute to Elena Edlmann who decided to leave all her most important possessions to her stepbrother Paolo (Raffaele's great grandfather - see previous posts) - the farms in Mugello!

Elena was born on the 30th of June 1838 in Genova.
Her father was Franz Edlmann (Raffaele's great great grandfather)
and her mother Josephine de Monteiro (a Portugese noble lady who maybe grew up in England....still investigating).
She was the 9th child and youngest girl in the family.
Her mother died in 1841 when she was only 3 and she grew up without a mother until 1850, when she was 12 and her father remarried Anna Padovani, just 15 years older than Elena. Between the two women there was a nearly instant understanding and their fond relationship was to last for Elena's entire life.

On the 14th of November 1862, when she was 24,
Elena married Giuseppe Martini in the family chapel in Fiesole.
Giuseppe came from a historical wealthy family with many properties in Mugello.
Their son Giacinto was born on the 23rd of March 1865
and unfortunately died when he was only 10.

Elena had a special relationship with Paolo because of her special connection to her stepmother Anna, called Annetta/e by all close family members.
Giuseppe passed away in 1892 leaving Elena an incredible inheritance that she decided to pass on to her youngest stepbrother and God child, Paolo.

After her death on the 7th of February 1903, Paolo became the owner of many important properties in Mugello among which Badia di Moscheta.
Her stepmother Anna outlived her and passed away 10 years later in 1913, age 90.

We like to think of Elena her as our Anna Maria Luisa de' Medici who instead of selling the Medici's fortune, left it to the city of Florence - exactly 160 years before Elena left hers to her stepbrother.
Had Giacinto lived, Il Poggio alle Ville would probably have not existed today...

We therefore strive every day to honour this tiny part of that important inheritance which has significant emotional value for our family.

Stay in touch for more posts in the coming weeks.

So many of you ask us how old is Il Poggio alle Ville - well, we have probably managed to find out while researching for our series!

is a new series of posts we will (hopefully) publish weekly sharing with you insights and curiosities from Ioana's research into our family history.
We will not start with "the beginning" as it is quite difficult to determine it for the time being :-)

The reference year for the moment will be 1903 when Raffaele's great grandfather Paolo Edlmann, 48 years old at that time, officially inherits a huge amount of properties in Mugello.
In our attempt to put together the pieces of the intricate puzzle of our family history, we will be taking you back and forth in time from this watershed. A long journey discovering the lives of our ancestors.

Zooming into this photo from 1909, you will discover him: the gentleman with the long white beard, center left. He was 54 then, father of three children in their 20s. The setting is Badia di Moscheta in Firenzuola, owned by the family until the second half of the 20th century.

Paolo Edlmann was born on the 27th of September 1855 at 1.25 am in Fiesole, Villa Landskronn, the family's holiday home on the hills of Florence. His Austrian father Franz Xavier was 64 at the time of his birth and his Austrian-Italian mother Anna Maria Maddalena called Annetta 32!

Paolo could have died in 1868 when he suffered from thyphoid fever and in 1869 when he fell ill with smallpox. He survived and had a very rich life until he turned 80.
Il Poggio alle Ville is a very tiny part of what he had inherited as a result of a series of coincidences, a place where he probably never set foot during his life. However, he would be quite proud of how it looks like today 😉

Happy New Year 2023!
Wishing you to find every day small treasures which will give you an immense joy!
One of the many pencil drawings depicting countryside houses and nature done by Raffaele's great grandfather Paolo when he was a very young man, 150 years ago or so. A new discovery in our family archive😍

Reconnecting with traditions is what we do at our organic farm in Mugello, Tuscany.
Since we are an international family, today we were in Ioana's hometown Bucharest with our daughters for Saint John's celebrations (San Giovanni).

We made flower crowns for at

"In Romanian folklore Sânzienele (good fairies) are very beautiful girls who live in the forests or fields unexplored by people. They float in the air or walk on the ground on the night of June 23 to June 24, dancing and singing. The skies open on this magical night and miracles can happen. 🧚🏻‍♀️ 24th of June is also the Universal Day of the Romanian Blouse – IA, a celebration set in 2013 by community and currently marked by Romanian communities all around the world."
