Ogliastra Region - Sardinia
In the Earth of Ogliastra Region, Ulassai is a small municipality, but rich in gorgeous landscapes. The town appears enclosed between the large complex of Tacco di Ulassai (tacco means literally heel, because of its shape) in the north and the imposing "Monte Tisiddu" in south: at foot of Tacco di Ulassai there is a complex system of caves, the most famous of which, the Marmuri cave with its 800 meters long and its internal concretions, is the main tourist destination of the whole valley of Pardu; these caves in periods of intense rainfall escapes from a downstream side of the impressive Lecorci Falls. In evergreen forests lives a rich fauna, protected by the recent establishment of the faunal oasis Girisai. To the south, the country is dominated by high cliffs of Mount Tisiddu and its highest peak, the Bruncu Matzeu, whose summit, 957 meters high, in a clear day, you can see the Gennargentu massif. To the east, the Rio Pardu valley is planted with olive trees; to the west, a road follows the south side of Tacco di Ulassai, continuing at the foot of the great Tacco di Su Àccara, with its tip "Seccu" of 1,000 meters, the highest in the municipal area, arriving in Santa Barbara, where stands a country church in 1600, and loggias to the side of "is cumbessias", resort known especially for large Lequarci's waterfalls, that during the rainy season flock to the waters of the entire valley above Taccu. Santa Barbara country church is located about 7 km from Ulassai, around it we find a sort of portico built in the late Roman period, "Is Cumbessias" that served as lodgings for the shepherds and people of the country come to participate in the festivities that lasted a week or so. In the southern part of the complex it is still present the old enclosure wall where they were milked the sheep and the goats of the saint, and it is still called "The Holy Court" (Sa Corte e sa Santa).
