During the evening of February 3rd, the people of Catania head to Piazza Duomo, all with their noses in the air ready to admire the majestic fireworks. It is precisely the fires of the "sira o' tri" that mark the beginning of the celebration. According to tradition, the fires are given the task of waking up the Patron Saint, who rests in her "camaredda" which will be left by the Saint exclusively for the upcoming celebrations.

Those who know and love Sicily cannot fail to appreciate the rice arancini, one of the most typical examples of street food of the region's gastronomic tradition, sold everywhere, on stalls, in ovens, in markets, in fry shops. Today the Sicilian arancino is to be counted among the best known and most appreciated street food products and is consumed at any time of day or night. Arancini small ball of fried rice stuffed mainly with meat sauce and now available in a thousand variations of shape and filling (they are called "arancine" in Palermo and in the western part of Sicily) or mainly conical ("arancini" in Catania and in the eastern part). It all began during the Arab domination (827-1091), which in 200 years brought culture, poetry, arts, beautiful monuments and, in particular, cuisine to the island.
The use of spices, sugar, perfumes are just some of the characteristics of Sicilian cuisine that have a strong Arab imprint as well as cassata, cous cous, granita and arancino are just some of the typical dishes of the island that they would not exist without the Arabs. In particular, as regards the history of the Sicilian Arancino, it is certain that the Arabs used to eat the rice timbale (invented by the Emir Ibn al Thumna) flavored with saffron. In fact, during banquets, a tray loaded with saffron rice was placed in the center of the table and consumed by balling it up in a fist and seasoning it with lamb meat and vegetables.

There are 4 ways to get from Calabria to Sicily by ferry, train, bus, night bus, car ferry or car. If you are already in Italy and would like to arrive in Sicily by car, you will have the possibility to cross the Strait of Messina by ferry. The crossing takes about 30 minutes. Very beautiful is the crossing during the sunset.

Capo d'Orlando is a seaside resort on the coast of north-east Sicily, to the east of Milazzo. Capo d'Orlando is a nice clean resort with a long beach and a pleasant place to spend a relaxing day at the beach, perhaps as somewhere to pass one night as you do a tour of the island. The beach is the principal attraction in the town. It is about two kilometres long, and a mix of sand and shingle. At the northern end of the beach there is a lighthouse at the point of Capo d'Orlando, where there are also some rocks to clamber around. If you would like to spend a night in this little corner of paradise, I highly recommend you: "B&B BELLAVISTA", amazing place, the pool is beautiful and the owners are very hospitable.

The symbol of the Trinacria is known today because it is present in the flag of Sicily and in that of the Isle of Man. Its history is articulated and, in some ways, still shrouded in mystery, or in any case, in indeterminacy, as it is linked to mythology. The Trinacria, symbol of Sicily, is composed of the head of the Gorgon, whose hair is snakes intertwined with ears of wheat, from which three legs bent at the knee radiate.

Catania, a history of a great city.
Populated since ancient times, Catania lived under Greek rule alternating blooms with total destruction. Only during the Roman domination, the city settled entirely for a long period, as numerous excavations testify to us. But what threatened the city under the Greek dominion of antiquity reappeared in the Middle Ages and the city still bears its marks today, we are talking about the Etna volcano. After numerous earthquakes and destructions due to lava flows, the city was finally rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries in its current form in black lava stone. an ancient city, which has Greek and Roman remains still clearly visible within its historic center, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The typical palace of Catania is baroque, also due to the fact that a large part of the city was swept away by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Observing the urban fabric of Catania today, one appreciates its linearity: unlike what happens in other cities, this one has been carefully planned and rebuilt several times. Inside the historic center, you must certainly visit the Cathedral of Sant’Agata, in front of the traditional elephant, the statue known throughout the world. Nearby we find many Baroque style buildings, with many parts in lava stone on the façade, which deeply characterize the city, giving it a dark, but not gloomy, air. Not far from the cathedral the fish market is held every morning, to visit at least once in a lifetime.

The seaside village of Acitrezza, is located, is in the center of the splendid "Riviera dei Ciclopi". Sicilian cannolo: between myths and legends here is the true story of a pastry myth. The Sicilian cannoli is certainly one of the best known, loved and above all exported sweets all over the world. Symbol of the confectionery art of the island, it is one of the most popular Italian pastry specialties from one end of the peninsula to the other and abroad. Inserted in the list of Traditional Agri-food Products (P.A.T.) held by the Ministry of Agricultural and Forestry Policies, the traditional Sicilian cannoli is made with a fried tube-shaped waffle filled with sheep's milk ricotta, but the filling can be varied: from custard Chantilly, from buffalo ricotta to chocolate pistachio cream. The history of the Sicilian Cannolo is in some ways uncertain. Having no recorded news, the origins of this dessert can be reconstructed through assumptions and some hints in ancient writings. Instead, what seems certain is that the cannoli has very ancient beginnings and that over time it has undergone considerable variations up to the present day in the form and substance that we all know.

Castelmola, Sicily; a beautiful village above Taormina. Castelmola is a small medieval village in Sicily, which is part of the prestigious club “I Borghi più Belli d’Italia” (the most beautiful italian villages). The historic center of this village is very suggestive, thanks to its perfectly preserved medieval urban layout, made up of picturesque narrow streets, small squares and ancient churches. I suggest to spend a few hours there, maybe also make a stop for a breakfast or a lunch at Bar Turrisi, a truly unique place, reviewed by "Focus" as one of the seven most particular bars in the world.

Savoca, another place to see near Taormina is Savoca, a typical village of medieval, Renaissance and Baroque origin. Savoca is a town included in the circuit of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Known as the land of the film the godfather, as some scenes from the famous film by Francis Ford Coppola were set in some historical places such as the Vitelli bar and the Trimarchi palace. The village of Savoca is surrounded by nature, you will be surprised by the many paths between citrus groves and vineyards. Among the places of greatest interest are the church of San Nicolò, the church of San Michele and the Capuchin convent which houses 37 mummified corpses inside its crypt. Savoca was defined by the writer Leonardo Sciascia as the town of seven faces, due to the many views that its landscape offers.
