Introducing the VORAGINE CRATER, now the highest point on . 🌋
After low-intensity eruptions that began on June 14 and rapidly intensified on July 4, the Voragine Crater, silent for over three years, has resumed its eruptive activity.
Small have poured into the adjacent Bocca Nuova Crater, and spectacular lava fountains have deposited pyroclastic material on the Voragine crater’s rims, significantly altering the summit’s morphology of the .
Previously, the Southeast Crater held the highest peak since 2021 at 3,354 meters. Now, the new scoria cone of Voragine has surpassed it by over ten meters, reaching an all-time high of 3,368 meters - an unprecedented record.
Mount Etna is continuously evolving and is still erupting. New eruptions could further elevate Etna’s peak, while a partial collapse of the new cone could lower it again.
