It’s easy to see why the Autumn is one of our favourite seasons with so much going on in our beautiful surrounding hills.
La Vendemmia, the Italian word for grape harvest takes place generally towards the end of September and October and in some cases for late fermenting wines it can continue right up until November.
It is a crucial time when the grapes that have been lovingly cultivated throughout the year are collected in order to begin the complex process of ‘vinification’.
Using a the same vine cultivation since the Middle Ages, Vernaccia di Serrapetrona DOCG is the only black Vernaccia (sparkling wine) in the land, and comes from a very small group of vineyards in the hills of Le Marche that sit up to 500m above sea level.
To create its intense flavour, the local berry Vernaccia grapes, are cut from the vine and then immediately hung in a purpose built storage space to enable them to intensify in their flavour and sweetness. They then sit there for you to 3 months to partially dry during the winter before undergoing three fermentations phases before being bottled.
So for those of you who are thinking of coming to Le Marche at this time of year, not only do you get to see the olive oil pressing but we can also take you to see these infamous grapes being dried before we take you to taste the fruits of the land in a wine tasting experience!
