These are the beauties I picked up from the tourist office yesterday. These will be in The Ivy for our guests and I know they will be incredibly useful. One of the reasons people love Abruzzo is because it is unspoiled by tourism - but the downside of this has been a lack of information - discovering it’s secrets takes time. One of Abruzzo’s amazing trabocchi. If you are allergic to shellfish (as I am) and can’t go to a trabocco restaurant to eat, you can still visit this one. Guided tours are just 10 euros. Fantastic value.

If you like cycling, book now because May is less than a month away. May is when Abruzzo hosts the Giro D’Italya and this year is even more exciting than usual.

This year, the 2023 actually starts in Abruzzo on May 6

The loop starts at the Costa dei Trabocchi from Fossacesia Marina to Ortona.

The second stage on Sunday 7 May goes from Teramo to San Salvo. The following day, the caravan will say goodbye to Abruzzo with a stage starting from Vasto heading south before returning to the area on Friday 12 May with the seventh stage ending at the Gran Sasso d'Italia (Campo Imperatore).

So … lots of opportunity!

Coming up to Easter and thoughts are turning to warmer temperatures and longer days. Almost everywhere has a dramatic Easter procession to see. I’ve yet to visit the passion play at Gessopalena - just a few miles away, but I can vouch for the procession in Chieti as being one of the most spine tingling things I’ve yet witnessed. This picture is from Altino a few years ago, before the procession started. This year, I’m torn …. So much to see!

LA PROCESSIONE DI CRISTO MORTO IN CHIETI
One of the oldest not only of Abruzzo, but in the whole of Italy, the Good Friday procession in Chieti is certainly the most solemn and spectacular Easter events in the region. While its origins, according to a legend, date back to the 9th century, in its current form the procession exists since the 16th century. Local confraternities dressed in hooded tunics walk through the dark streets of the historic center carrying various stations of the cross symbols accompanied by 150-members strong orchestra and choir, who perform the poignant Miserere, an 18th-century composition by Saverio Selecchy

The little house right next door to The Ivy is all ready for it’s annual winter visitors …

Every year citizens of Civitella Messer Raimondo make a nativity trail in the historic centre, culminating in this, the official commune nativity site. All year it lays empty, nestled against the Ivy, then for the magical Christmas season it twinkles with light, warmth and hope.

Olive picking is early this year but if it’s something you’ve always wanted to try, come to Abruzzo at the end of October or the beginning of November. The weather is usually perfect for a day outdoors, harvesting the delicious Abruzzese olives. If you’re really nice to us we could arrange a days picking for you, then you can see the olives being pressed and taste the freshest, purest olive oil imaginable

23rd October at 3.30pm. Outside a fabulous local restaurant where we have just eaten the MOST exquisite lunch. 3 courses of sublimity. Less than 40 euros a head including wine, coffee and digestivi. Just saying …..
