Quando cominciammo a guadagnare i primi soldi con i romanzi, mettemmo il telefono in casa. Quello con i fili e con il disco dei numeri. Mia moglie mi disse: ‘Ma non staremo esagerando con il lusso?’

E poi ho imparato a vivere per sottrazione. Cerco di togliere il superfluo per apprezzare la vita. Circondarsi di orpelli e oggetti inutili crea dipendenza e schiavitù. E cerco di valorizzare i giovani. È la lezione di Cechov: non siate egoisti, aprite la strada agli altri”.
