Friday Tuscan Tidbit⚜️ 💜💜⚜️
​Almost every corner, building or street in Florence gives you an opportunity to find something new every day.
High on the left side of the facade of Santa Maria Maggiore Church, there is is a stone head embedded in the tower, the Forentines call it "La Berta.”
What is her history? Two are the most well-know version:
The first a bit supernatural says that in the 1327 a scientist and humanist, was sentenced to death by the Inquisition Court. As he walked towards the ex*****on, passing in front of this church, he asked for water. The woman denied it and Cecco d'Ascoli cursed her saying "And you will never get your head out of here". So it was that the woman was instantly petrified.
The less magical version tells that is the face portrait of a woman who donated with her savings a bell to the church . To thanks her, the citizens immortalized her face in the in the cathedral.

Quasi ogni angolo, edificio o strada di Firenze ti dà l'opportunità di trovare qualcosa di nuovo ogni giorno.
In alto sul lato sinistro della facciata della chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore, vi è una testa di pietra incastonata. "La Berta" lo chiamano i Fiorentini.
Qual è la sua storia? Due sono la versione più accreditate:
Il prima, un po' soprannaturale, afferma che nel 1327 Cecco d'Ascoli, scienziato ed umanista venne condannato a morte dal tribunale dell'Inquisizione. Mentre camminava verso il patibolo, passando davanti a questa chiesa, chiese dell'acqua. La donna gliela negò e l'uomo le lanciò una maledizione dicendo "E tu di lì il capo non caverai mai". Fu così che la donna fu immediatamente pietrificata.
La versione meno magica racconta che è il ritratto del volto di una donna che ha donato con i suoi risparmi una campana alla chiesa. Per ringraziarla, i cittadini hanno immortalato il suo volto nella cattedrale.

Friday Tuscan tidbit 💜⚜️💜
Stendhal syndrome is a psychosomatic condition involving rapid heartbeat, fainting, confusion and even hallucinations, allegedly occurring when individuals become exposed to object or phenomena of great beauty.
The affliction is named after 19th-century French author Stendhal (pseudonym of Marie-Henri Beyle), who described his experience with the phenomenon during his 1817 visit to Florence in his book Naples and Florence: A Journey from Milan to Reggio. When he visited the Basilica of Santa Croce, he was overcome with profound emotion. Stendhal wrote:
"I was in a sort of ecstasy, from the idea of being in Florence, close to the great men whose tombs I had seen. Absorbed in the contemplation of sublime beauty. I reached the point where one encounters celestial sensations. Everything spoke so vividly to my soul. Ah, if I could only forget. I had palpitations of the heart, what in Berlin they call 'nerves'. Life was drained from me. I walked with the fear of falling."
Although psychologists have long debated whether Stendhal syndrome exists, the apparent effects on some individuals are severe enough to warrant medical attention. The staff at Florence's Santa Maria Nuova hospital's are accustomed to tourists suffering from dizzy spells or disorientation after viewing the statue of David, the artworks of the Uffizi Galley, and other historic relics of the Tuscan city.

The city of Florence has not sponsored any official parades and floats in many years, but in 2020 the municipality has organized a free Carnival event on Saturday, February 22. Festivities start in Piazza Santa Maria Novella at 3:30 pm, featuring bands, dancers and street artists, all of whom will join participants from the Viareggio and Venice Carnivals together with face painters, music and games to keep all ages entertained. A parade will move towards Piazza della Signoria with revelers in costume joining in.

Friday Tuscan Tidbit⚜️💜
The Schiacciata alla Fiorentina in spite of what the name suggest is a typical Florentine dessert. Usually prepared just in the Carnival period, it is a beautiful, soft, no too sweet with an orange flavor cake. Rectangular shaped and above all, must not exceed 3 cm in height otherwise it would no longer be a schiacciata (the word schiacciata literally means flattened).
For the greedy, there is the filled with whipped cream version, but the original only requires just sprinkle of icing sugar.
There are simplified versions of the recipe to try to make it at home, but the failure rate is very very high.
Every Florentine pastry has is own secret recipe. The only option is to take a tour in every pastry shop here in Florence and taste this delight. It will be worth it!

Tuscan tidbit valentine's day special edition!💜💜⚜️
Originally it was a pagan festivity of Lupercalia, dedicated to fertility. A bacchanal, famous for excesses and transgressions throughout ancient Rome.
The current of lovers' day finds its origins in the nomination of Saint Valentine as patron of lovers and takes place around 500 AD. The institution of this Christian holiday was aimed at replacing the reprehensible pagan cults, established on February 14th. Regarding the life of the saint and the reason for his consecration as protector of lovers, religious literature is a little foggy, and it is only towards the fifteenth century that the practice of exchanging the famous "Valentine" cards with symbols of romantic love that come up.
