THE SALT OF OUR (VOL)TERRA

In the recipe for Eggplant Parmigiana from our previous post, we didn’t mention one crucial ingredient that’s essential in all the world’s cuisines: salt. The purest salt in Italy doesn’t come from the sea but from the Salt Pans of Volterra, the oldest deposit on the peninsula, where salt has been extracted for over 3,000 years and continues to be today. This unique place, just minutes away from the stunning Etruscan city of Volterra, in the heart of Tuscany, is now open for visits.

You’ll traverse a landscape unlike any other in the world, and perhaps afterward, you’ll want to continue exploring the rest of our diverse region, from the sea to the Alps.

But before you embark on your journey, don’t forget to always add a little "salt" to your life! (Salt is the spice of life).

Safe travels, we’re here to make it special!

What the Italians Are - Part 4:
Eggplant Parmigiana

Try asking any Italian, whether from the north or south of the peninsula, what their most beloved summer dish is. The unanimous answer will surely be: PARMIGIANA!

Indeed, this iconic dish has three main ingredients carefully layered: fried eggplant, summer tomatoes, and Parmigiano! What more could you ask for? Perhaps some fresh basil and succulent mozzarella. And if you pair it with good homemade bread, bliss is guaranteed.

Come share with us Italians the beauty of simple, authentic ingredients from our land.

Take a seat at the table, and we'll take care of the rest!

What Italians Are - Part 4:
A Star Falls, Make a Wish!

On the night of August 10th, every year, the eyes of Italians all over the world turn hopefully to the sky, hoping to catch a shooting star. Scientifically, the fall of these stars is attributed to the passage of asteroids from the Perseus constellation (known as Perseids) within Earth’s visual orbit. However, culturally, the rain of stars has been interpreted in a more poetic way.

This night has long been dedicated to the martyrdom of St. Lawrence, who was buried in the basilica bearing his name in Rome in the third century. The shooting stars are said to be the tears shed by the saint during his torture, wandering eternally in the heavens and descending to earth only on the day of his death, creating a magical atmosphere full of hope.

We wish you catch a million Italian stars, filled with love, joy, and hope!

What Italians Are - Part 3:
Traditions and Folklore: the Palio di Siena

The Palio di Siena is the most famous historic horse race in Italy, with centuries-old origins. It takes place twice a year in the beautiful medieval square of Siena, Piazza del Campo, on July 2nd and August 16th.

The Palio is a tradition that lasts a total of four days, from the morning of June 29th until the races on July 2nd and from August 13th to 16th. The race consists of three laps around Piazza del Campo, on a track made of a mix of sand and "tufo," with 10 horses and 10 jockeys representing each "contrada" (neighborhoods of the city). The horse that completes the three laps first, with or without a jockey, wins.

What Italians Are - Part 2:
MUSICA MAESTRO!

Giacomo Puccini was undoubtedly one of Italy's greatest composers, born in Lucca and always staying close to his beloved Tuscany.

The Puccini Festival is Italy's most important opera festival and the only one in the world dedicated to Puccini. It takes place in the summer, in July and August, in a large open-air theater by Lake Massaciuccoli, right in front of Puccini’s House Museum, not far from the Versilia sea.

Choose your seat and let yourself be carried away by the arias of Tosca, Manon Lescaut, La Boheme… ask us how!

What Italians Are - Part 1:
IT’S SO HOT! LET'S COOL OFF AT THE MUSEUM

Italy, Italians: a people rich in history, diversity, art, culinary culture, and stunning landscapes. The early 20th century, despite its challenges between the two World Wars, produced great masters in art. What better way to escape the scorching heat than by visiting a small yet significant museum in Florence that helps us understand Italian culture through the art of that period?

This major scientific project celebrates the first ten years of the museum and one of Alberto della Ragione’s most sensational acquisitions: a work by Modigliani that joined his collection eighty years ago in 1944. The only self-portrait by the Livorno-born painter, one of the world's most valued works, arrives in Florence for the exhibition "Ritorni. Da Modigliani a Morandi," which brings together for the first time about fifteen works by great Italian 20th-century masters once owned by Alberto Della Ragione. Alongside Modì’s legendary self-portrait, the exhibition features Morandi's Metaphysical Still Life, Carrà's Enchanted Room, and Guttuso's grand Crucifixion, all priceless loans from major Italian and foreign museums.
