The hands-down best Affogato in at Vivoli 🍦☕️

What is the al Caffè? A hot espresso poured over vanilla gelato in a prechilled cup, a drinkable perfection.

Where? Gelateria , historic ice cream shop in Florence.
The birth of the ice cream parlor dates back to the last century, in 1929, when the Vivoli family opened a small dairy in the Santa Croce district of Florence. But it was only a few years later, in 1932, that his brother Raffaello decided to transform the business into an ice cream shop. Today the business is managed by the grandchildren Patrizia and Silvana who, with their quality work, have also won the Due Coni in ’s Gelaterie d’Italia 2023 guide.
At Vivoli you can eat high quality ice cream and the offer ranges from traditional flavors such as cream or zabaione, to more particular ones such as peach with basil, lemon flavored with rosemary, rich chocolate, salted caramel, pears and caramel, Vin santo and cantucci. And of course, don’t miss the coffee Affogato!

This pic explains why is called that! The name derives from the Latin Locus Rotundus, which means round place. This name derives from the first half of the 13th century, when the village expanded to the top of a hill enclosed in the city walls, taking on the circular shape that still characterizes it today ✨

✨ Reopening to the public tomorrow, The in turns over a new leaf in its 109 years of culture.

📚 Open seven days a week, from 8:30 in the morning to the end of each night’s film, , or GO, as it is styled, maintains its mission as a cinema. One screen guarantees night-time movie projections, while a LED wall, unique in central Italy, ensures daytime entertainment in Italian and English. What immediately grabs the attention, however, are the bookshelves lined with 25,000-plus titles occupying the entire ground floor, including the foyer.

🎬 The cinema/theatre opened in 1922 in Palazzo dello Strozzino, one of the most striking palazzos in central Florence, which Palla Strozzi had had built in 1457 according to a design by Filippo and developed by di Bartolomeo Michelozzi. In 1914, based on the advice of actress Eleonora Duse, the new owners decided to inaugurate a stylish cinema hall, entrusting Florentine architect Adolfo Coppedè with the plans, which were brought to a close by another renowned architect, Marcello Piacentini. This exceptional edifice boasting elegant Art Déco-style interiors, sculptures by Antonio Maraini and tapestries by Matilde Festa Piacentini, opened as Cinema Teatro Savoia with a glamorous gala night on December 14, 1922. In 1936, it was taken over by Giovanni Germani before going on to host world-class film premieres, theatre performances and musicals over the years. It was renamed Cinema-Teatro Odeon when it was reopened in 1946 after the Second World War. Managed by the Germani family for 87 years, the Odeon has welcomed Italian and international stars like Louis Armstrong, Isabelle Adjani, Kate Winslet, Roberto Benigni, Bernardo Bertolucci and Paolo Sorrentino. Now, in 2023, Gloria Germani made the decision to embrace a partnership with publishing house Giunti Editore in order to secure a future for the cultural centre.

📣 ’s “secret room” opens regularly for visitors, in the basement of the .

😮 It is thought that the artist had lived there secretly for a few months in 1530 and that he had used it to sketch some of his works on the walls.

🔎 In November 1975, a suitable new exit for the museum was being sought. The then director of the museum, , instructed the restorer to carry out cleaning tests in a narrow corridor beneath the apse of the New Sacristy. The small room—10 metres long, three metres wide, and two and a half metres high at the top of the vault—was used to store slack coal until 1955. It had remained unused, sealed and forgotten for decades below a trapdoor covered by wardrobes, furniture and stacked furnishings. Removing two layers of plaster, Giovannoni discovered several figure drawings in charcoal and sanguine on the walls that Dal Poggetto mostly attributed to Michelangelo. His theory was that they had been carried out while the artist sought refuge in this space in 1530, when the Prior of San Lorenzo, , hid him from the wrath of VII, who was infuriated because the artist (during the period in which the Medici were driven out of the city) had served as supervisor of the city’s fortifications for the short-lived republican government (1527-30). He obtained the family’s forgiveness after around two months, between the end of June and the end of October 1530, when he was finally free and resumed his duties in until he left the city for Rome in 1534. Dal Poggetto posited the theory that the drawings produced during the artist’s “self-confinement” used the walls to “sketch out” some of his projects, such as works from the New Sacristy like the legs of Giuliano de’ , Duke of Nemours, and details such as the head of Laocoön. The works are still the subject of scholarly debate.

🚪 The will be open on an experimental basis to small groups of visitors until March 30, 2024.

The (rare) spectacle of the in .

An so far south has probably never been seen before. It happened Sunday evening in many parts of , from Poland to Slovenia. But also in Italy, in the Alps and... in , in Val d'Orcia. The atmospheric event, characterized by long colored bands that cross the celestial vault - in this case taking on red and pink tones in particular - was photographed in the municipality of Pienza, in the Spedaletto area. According to the opinion of experts, it would have been caused by a category 3 solar storm on a scale of 5. Only a lucky few were able to immortalize the celestial vault.

⚜️ Today we tell the story of the symbol of , the , that the city has proudly carried on her coat of arms for almost a thousand years.

🏛️ The origin of the lily symbol can be traced back to the ruling class of the Empire. It is possible that the Florentine version was derived from that symbol.

🌷 But he simplest and more plausible explanation for the symbol of Florence is that it was derived from the flower that traditionally grows in the area around the city: Fiorentina.

⚔️ This beautiful white flower was first applied to the city’s coat of arms in the 11th century; it was white on a red background. After the bloody battle between the and the , which ended in 1250 with a victory for the Guelphs, they switched the colors as a sign of their power, thus creating the famous symbol of the red giglio on a white background.

📖 In the Divine Comedy Alighieri describes the eve of this event as follows: ‘The lily of the flagpole was not yet reversed and not colored red by division…’

🪙 The new arm was so important to Florence that in 1252 it graced the first Florin that was ever created.

⚜️ The Giglio Fiorentino can be found on countless places in the city. On old coats of arms on historic buildings, but also on the numerous logos like that of the municipality of Florence and the football club. It is even tattooed on the skin of many Florentines and is truly present... everywhere.
Florence and her giglio have been inseparable for 10 centuries and that is not going to change any time soon.

🌸 And a unique place in the world, the , near Piazzale , is the only botanical garden dedicated to this variety in Europe. It was created with the aim of hosting an annual international competition for the best varieties of iris, the "Florence Prize", first launched in 1954!

on holiday in , during the Medici Chapels .
It is not the actor's first time in the city: a year ago, together with some family members, he visited Palazzo Vecchio and the Uffizi, paying particular attention to the Annunciation by Leonardo Da Vinci. Not surprisingly: his parents called him Leonardo inspired by this work.
