An entirely Florentine tradition already documented since the 18th century and continued at least until the dawn of the 20th century.
We are talking about the “Stump” or “Ceppo”, ancestor of the Christmas tree, which families prepared on Christmas Eve.
It is a curious pyramid-shaped object crossed by some shelves, adorned with pine cones, tassels, lace, colored paper and candles. The lowest shelf was intended to house the “hut”, while the gifts for the children were carefully arranged on the upper ones. They anxiously awaited the ringing of the bell which announced, at the end of the dinner, the entry of the log, which was placed in the center of the table.
Before the gifts were delivered, the children had to recite a Christmas poem.

Una tradizione tutta fiorentina già documentata dal XVIII secolo e continuata almeno fino agli albori del ‘900.
Parliamo del “Ceppo”, antenato dell’albero di Natale, che le famiglie preparavano il giorno della Vigilia di Natale.
E’ un oggetto curioso di forma piramidale attraversato da alcuni ripiani, adornato di pigne, nappe, trine, carta colorata e candele. Il ripiano più in basso era destinato ad accogliere la “capannuccia”, mentre su quelli superiori venivano accuratamente sistemati i doni per i bambini. Questi attendevano con ansia il suono del campanello che annunciava, al termine della cena, l’ingresso del ceppo, il quale veniva posto al centro della tavola.
Prima della consegna dei regali i bambini dovevano recitare una poesia di Natale.
