San Giovanni Baptistery is the oldest religious building of Florence.
Built on the remains of an ancient Roman domus, its iconic octagonal shape, the spectacular white and green marble covering the exterior, its beautiful gold doors and the interior’s sparkling mosaics enchant every visitor.
But baptistery is also keeper of a few secrets ...

The "naval battle"

If you walk near the baptistery maybe you can see this bas-relief. Look closely and you’ll see a naval battle... But why?
This section of the Baptistery is believed to be part of an ancient Roman sarcophagus, an artifact incorporated into the wall to commemorate Florence’s Roman origins.

It is hard to organize a tour of the artisans or recommend a good leather shop in a very touristic place. Everything looks artificial, something opened not for locals but just for International customers.
However, I have no doubts about Antonio, whom I have known for 28 years or so! Caterina , his daughter, is a dear friend of mine from high school.
You can find Antonio working in his workshop in Cerbaia or selling his products in Piazza Ognissanti during the Sunday market.
