The Tower of the Fifanti is now the bell tower of the Santa Felicita church in Florence. The tower is located in a place that is now difficult to access, but it is clearly visible from the Boboli Gardens. The Fifanti were a Ghibelline family exiled in 1258 but returned after the Battle of Montaperti, only to be permanently expelled again in 1267. The last known mention of this family dates back to 1311. The tower has been renovated to serve as a bell tower. Its cladding is in exposed stone ashlar, with some openings without corbels and a few arrow slits. In the bell chamber, at the top, four pairs of tall and narrow single-lancet windows open, two on each side, with arched coverings. The lower part has been blocked with brick to create a parapet. At the top, beneath the low pyramid-shaped roof, some iron reinforcements are visible.

Torre degli Alepri
The Torre degli Alepri is located at 52 red via della Condotta, next to the Palazzo dei Cerchi, in Florence. The Alepri were part of the consortium of the Galigai, Buonaguisi, Della Pressa, and Giugni families. Exiled as Ghibellines, their property was confiscated and seized by the city administration.
The tower has been renovated several times and features five floors with medieval-style filaretto masonry, although the corners are reinforced with blocks of thicker, squared stone. On the ground floor, there is a portal similar to those of the nearby Palazzo Cerchi, suggesting it was renovated at a later date. The upper floors have a row of vertically aligned, low-arched monofore windows, with the top floor reconstructed later, featuring a rectangular window.
The masonry has some pontaie holes, but they lack corbels, indicating they likely only supported scaffolding during the building's construction.

Luigi Bertelli, known as Vamba, is the author of "Il giornalino di Gian Burrasca". Born in Florence in 1858, he rests in the Cemetery of Porte Sante, near the Church of San Miniato al Monte, in the "Northeast Bastion" section. His pseudonym, Vamba, derives from the name of a character in W. Scott's "Ivanhoe". Among his most famous children's works are "Ciondolino" from 1895, a story about a child magically transformed into an ant, providing naturalistic observations on insects, and "Il giornalino di Gian Burrasca", published in 1912 in "Il giornalino della domenica" between February 1907 and May 1908.

The Museum of San Marco houses one of Beato Angelico's most captivating masterpieces: the Madonna delle Ombre. This fresco, with tempera additions, is located in the San Marco convent, along the eastern corridor, between cells 25 and 26. Its exact dating fluctuates between the 1440s and the period after the artist's return from his Roman sojourn, post-1450.
The Madonna delle Ombre is an experimental work, named for the extraordinary effects of light and shadow that the artist managed to create, carefully studying the real light source reflecting along the corridor. To achieve this, Beato Angelico extensively employed tempera, a technique that captured subtle changes in light more accurately.
This artistic approach may suggest inspiration from Flemish luministic sensibility, although for Angelico, light was primarily a means to achieve clear and vivid images, in line with the monastic nature of the work. The Madonna delle Ombre thus represents a captivating blend of innovative technique and the artist's profound spirituality, offering visitors to the San Marco Museum a unique and evocative experience.

The Torre a Decima Castle, situated above the picturesque village of Molin del Piano, represents an important testament to the feudal power that dominated the territory over the centuries.
Dating back to the 12th century, this imposing fortress was initially owned by the Saltarelli family, local lords who contributed to the expansion of the original structures, transforming it into the central nucleus with towers and battlements that still characterize it today. In the 15th century, under the rule of the Pazzi family, the castle underwent further transformations, with the addition of Renaissance-style porticoes and loggias, while the fortified perimeter was reinforced with massive stone bastions.
The presence of the chapel dedicated to Santa Maria Maddalena de' Pazzi, dating back to the Middle Ages, testifies to the religious and cultural importance of the site. Legend has it that the castle served as a refuge for the Pazzi family after the failure of the conspiracy of 1478 against the Medici, an event that deeply marked the history of Florence.
Today, the Torre a Decima Castle is a private residence and unfortunately not open to the public inside, but its grandeur and history can be admired from the outside, offering visitors a fascinating journey through the medieval and Renaissance epochs.

The Castello della Paneretta, located in the picturesque area of Chianti Classico, is a historical landmark of the region, dating back to ancient times and rich in charm and history.
Built around a medieval watchtower, the castle has undergone transformations and expansions over the centuries, becoming an important landmark in the area. Initially belonging to the Vettori family, it passed into the hands of Ludovico Capponi and his wife Maddalena in 1577, who undertook a restoration and embellishment project, commissioning frescoes from the renowned Mannerist painter Bernardino Poccetti to decorate the inner courtyard.
During this period, the Castello della Paneretta became a meeting place for artists and literati, attracting prominent figures such as Girolamo Muzio, who dedicated a poem to the castle and spent the last years of his life there.
In addition to its cultural significance, the castle also has a long winemaking tradition, documented as far back as 1596. In 1669, the Strozzi family inherited the castle and a valuable collection of codices and books, which later contributed to the formation of the Riccardiana Library in Florence.
The property remained in the hands of the Strozzi family until 1984, when the Albisetti family took possession. Today, with its extensive grounds, mostly wooded, the Castello della Paneretta is one of the largest agricultural estates in the area, annually producing 900 hectoliters of fine Chianti Classico from 22 hectares of vineyards.

The Cemetery of the Holy Doors (Porte Sante a San Miniato al Monte) is a place steeped in history and significance, and among the numerous artworks it houses, the tomb of the sisters Bianca and Emma Marchesini, dating back to 1874, stands out for its exceptional beauty and realism.
The artwork captures attention for its extraordinary realism, especially in the way it portrays Emma Marchesini. The moment she rises from her chair to greet her sister is rendered with breathtaking precision. The decorative details add further charm to the piece, transporting the viewer into a sort of living scene, as if the two sisters were still in their playroom.
It's truly a must-see for anyone visiting the cemetery. Not only does it offer an extraordinary artistic experience, but also a unique opportunity to reflect on life and death, and the eternal bond between the two.

Fibula Corsini, a treasure of Etruscan jewelry, is preserved at the Archaeological Museum of Florence.
โœ… Birds must have held a great fascination in the Etruscan mind. The mystery of flight constituted a fundamental part of the so-called "Etruscan discipline": one of the priestly categories, that of the augurs, drew auspices from the flight of winged creatures even in determining the orientation of city walls in the foundation of cities. But for the Etruscans, birds were not only a divinatory symbol; they also concretely formed part of their daily life. Painted tombs, especially those of Tarquinia, show us a plethora of scenes depicting banquets, games, hunting, dances, and it is often discovered, alongside objects of everyday life, domestic animals, small trees, and beasts tearing their prey apart, birds of all kinds and species.
โœ… Birds are often depicted with a wealth of details that demonstrate a thorough study of the subject and an evident passion for ornithology. Now we will try, with the help of our knowledge of avifauna, to hypothesize a classification of the species of birds depicted in Etruscan tombs.

Malmantile, the origin of the name.
The origin of this curious toponym is traced back to an episode from the 4th century when Saint Ambrose, the bishop of Milan, on his way to central Italy, encountered Saint Zanobius, the bishop of Florence, in these lands. There is still a tabernacle at the site commemorating their meeting. The two saints remained in conversation for several days, guests at the villa of a local nobleman. When it was time to leave, Saint Ambrose, scandalized by the poor hospitality of the owner, who apparently boastfully flaunted his riches, uttered a curse. The phrase contained the words "Mala mantilia," meaning "bad tablecloth," to emphasize the poor reception he had received.
Legend has it that the saint's invective was promptly heeded. As soon as he left the village, it reportedly sank into a chasm without a trace. Since then, the inhabitants of the neighboring areas began to call the place "mal mantile." Today, there is no trace of the curse, and a visit to these parts offers beautiful hilly landscapes, noble villas, and a popular Medieval Festival, which takes place between May and June.

Palazzo dei Cartelloni, located at Via Sant'Antonino 11.
The name of the palace derives from the unusual inscriptions, carved within huge cartouches, commissioned at the end of the 17th century by its owner, the mathematician Vincenzo Viviani, to celebrate the life and discoveries of the master Galileo Galilei. In the 15th century, on the site of the building, it seems there were the houses of the Del Giocondo family, to which the famous Mona Lisa belonged.

The daughter of Leopold II and Maria Antonia, named Maria Luisa, was affectionately called "la Gobbina."
Maria Luisa was baptized in honor of her father's sister, the ailing Princess Maria Luisa (1799-1857), affectionately known as "la Gobbina" by the Florentine people.
Orphaned of her mother at the age of four, Maria Luisa was called "la Gobbina" due to her physical deformity, which prevented her from marrying. Despite this, she was known for her kindness, sensitivity, as evidenced by her handwriting, her charitable nature, and devout piety. She dedicated herself entirely to charity and prayer, leaving a positive impression among the people of Tuscany of her time.

At the Cimitero delle Porte Sante, visitors are often moved by the sight of a captivating life-size statue depicting a young couple. This statue portrays Maria and Mario Mazzone: Mario, dressed in his aviator uniform, wears a broad smile as he gazes directly at Maria, who, facing him, slightly turns her head to the side with her gaze directed downward. Even Maria smiles, dressed in her bridal gown, and both of their hands are poised to touch. The inscription tells us that Mario, born in 1919, died on April 22, 1944, in Hamm, Germany (presumably killed during a bombing), and that Maria passed away the following year, in May 1945, shortly before her wedding. Upon viewing the statues, one might envision two young lovers, perhaps dying shortly after marriage.
However, Maria and Mario were actually siblings, and it was their mother, in 1947, who instructed that the statue dedicated to the two siblings be placed on their graves. No other member of the Mazzone family is buried here.

โœ… The Madonna Rucellai, or Madonna dei Laudesi, is a Madonna and Child enthroned (therefore a "Maestร ") with six angels painted by Duccio di Buoninsegna. Originating from the church of Santa Maria Novella in Florence, it is preserved at the Uffizi Gallery.
โœ… The Nobility of Blue
Since the 13th century, the color symbolizing the highest degree of nobility, not only in painting, has been blue, a metaphor for spirituality and transcendence. In this period, as the cult of the Madonna spreads, it is the color of the Virgin's mantle, made with the dense and saturated hue obtained from the powder of precious lapis lazuli, trimmed at the edges with gold embroidery.

Casa Torri on Via delle Terme:
"The name of the street recalls the ancient Roman baths that once stood here, receiving water from a sophisticated hydraulic system originating from Mount Morello. These baths fell into disuse during the barbarian invasions, and in this area, wealthy landowning families erected numerous towers (known as 'scapitozzate' in ancient times) and fortified palaces. The street was the headquarters of the Buondelmonti family, among the earliest supporters of the Guelf faction in the city, and it was here that the funeral procession of Buondelmonte dei Buondelmonti passed, who was killed by a rival family near the Ponte Vecchio.
Unlike other streets in this central area, Via delle Terme was not altered during the 19th-century 'Risanamento' urban renewal project, nor was it significantly damaged during the Second World War. The Arte dei Galigai (Guild of Saddle and Harness Makers) was located on Via delle Terme, and the rear of the Palazzo di Parte Guelfa, including the 'Brunelleschian' portion, overlooked it. Not far from Via Por Santa Maria stands the Tower of the Judiciaries. Near the ancient alley of the Manetti family is the Buondelmonti Palace, extending to Borgo Santi Apostoli, belonging to the same family who owned the nearby Buondelmonti Tower. The towers and palace of the Altoviti family are a stone's throw from Piazza del Limbo, nestled within the historic consorterie (guilds) of the towers: Buondelmonti, Acciaiuoli, and the Spini."

๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ” "Saint Peter Martyr Enjoining Silence" is a masterpiece frescoed by Beato Angelico in the cloister of Sant'Antonino in the San Marco convent in Florence, dating back to around 1442. This splendid painting, commissioned by Cosimo de' Medici, testifies to the artist's skill and mastery in conveying a powerful message through art.
๐ŸŽจ During his decoration of the convent, Angelico painted several works, including five lunettes and an imposing Crucifix, which still enchant observers with their timeless beauty. Scholars agree on recognizing Angelico's artistic authenticity in all these works, emphasizing his extraordinary ability to capture the spiritual essence through painting.
๐Ÿ–ผ During a subsequent restoration in the XVI and XVII centuries, the fresco was enriched by two allegorical figures, adding further depth and meaning to the original composition.

Pieve di Gropina in Loro Ciuffenna, Arezzo.
Belonging to the 16th century is also the large oculus that illuminates the central nave above the restored and reopened bifora during the 20th-century renovations. The oculus is surmounted by a marble male head that legend identified with a portrait of Matilda of Canossa, but it should actually come from a possibly Roman age complex located further downstream, probably on the edges of the Cassia Vetus.

It was the bell tower of the Palazzo Comunale and is so named from the nickname "mangiaguadagni" given to its first custodian, Giovanni di Balduccio (or "di Duccio"), famous for greatly enjoying the pleasures of food and thus squandering his earnings at the table. It is among the tallest ancient Italian towers, reaching up to 102 meters to the lightning rod (second only to the Torrazzo di Cremona). It was built between 1325 and 1348.

The smoked columns on the sides of the Gates of Paradise of the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Florence, do you know their story?
โœ… "Blind Florentines and treacherous Pisans" is a saying that stems from the animosity Florence had, and still has, towards the city of Pisa. Precisely where does this expression come from?
To understand the expression, we must go to the heart of the city, to that "my beautiful San Giovanni" of Dantean memory.
โœ… Once at the Baptistery, one should look at the Gates of Paradise; on the sides of this entrance, there are two porphyry columns representing a rarity for Florence: despite the great rivalry with the city of Pisa, its inhabitants gifted two obelisks to the Florentines in 1117.

The Marucelliana Library on Via Cavour in Florence.
โœ…Born from Francesco Marucelli's desire as a public library for the less privileged, it opened to the public on September 18, 1752, in the same location where it still stands today (if it's true that the rich of the past were much better than those of today). In 1783, a collection of drawings and prints was established. The library significantly increased its book collection following the suppressions of ecclesiastical institutions between the 18th and early 19th centuries. Other important collections arrived in the early years of the Kingdom of Italy. Since 1910, thanks to the law establishing mandatory deposit of printed works, works printed in the province of Florence have been deposited in the library. Today, it possesses a vast heritage consisting of over 500,000 volumes (including incunabula and sixteenth-century editions), manuscripts, loose papers (literary, historical, artistic, and scientific autographs and correspondence), periodicals, and opera libretti, in addition to the important collection of prints and drawings (15th-19th centuries). Among the autographs, notable items include the papers of Francesco Redi, Giacinto Cestoni, and some letters of Antonio Vallisneri.
โœ…The library also houses the "Luigi Beuf Italian Cryptogamic Herbarium". The Herbarium consists of a collection of dried cryptogamic specimens (approximately 3,000 items) pasted on loose sheets. The work, preserved in the Manuscripts and Rare Books Room, was compiled in thirty installments at the European Library Luigi Beuf in Genoa between 1858 and 1867.

The National Museum of the Bargello
โœ… The museum houses important works by Michelangelo: the Bacchus, a youthful marble commissioned in Rome in 1496, reveals an extraordinary reinterpretation of ancient statuary and depicts the god of wine, drunk, raising a chalice while a satyr behind him tastes grapes from a large bunch. The museum also features the Pitti Tondo, commissioned in 1505 by Bartolomeo Pitti, and the David-Apollo (alternatively identified as either character), which according to Vasari's testimony, was sculpted for Baccio Valori, commissioner of Pope Clement VII following the return of the Medici to Florence in 1530. The Brutus โ€“ also inspired by classical statuary โ€“ was executed in Rome in 1536 for Cardinal Niccolรฒ Ridolfi at the instigation of the Florentine exile Donato Giannotti. It may celebrate Lorenzino de' Medici, the new Brutus, who had assassinated the tyrant Alessandro, his cousin. The bust was completed by the follower Tiberio Calcagni. The Bargello also displays the small wooden Crucifix, acquired by the Italian State in 2008 with attribution to Michelangelo and an extremely early dating of 1492-1495.

Tabernacle in Piazza del Capitolo in Florence. It's a small square near Piazza del Duomo in Florence and is situated in the shadow of Brunelleschi's Dome.
A beautiful eighteenth-century tabernacle in excellent condition, as the inscription in the cartouche placed above remains clearly readable. Inside is a copy of the venerated image of the Annunciation preserved in the Basilica of the Santissima Annunziata, with a note below right regarding a restoration promoted in 1847 by the Opera dei Cappellani del Duomo.
