Panarea is the smallest of the Aeolian Islands and an upscale tourist destination. Some islets surround it: Dattilo, Spinazzola, Basiluzzo, where remains of a Roman buildings still stand.
The western coast is characterized by high cliffs plunging into the sea, while the island’s eastern side gently slopes down to the sea. The three villages of Ditella, San Pietro and Drautto can be found on this side, sitting in vast groves of olive and Mediterranean maquis.
Typical Aeolian houses decorate San Pietro, Panarea’s most lively center, spread around a small port, where a hot water spring with beneficial therapeutic properties is at your service.
Beautiful Caldara beach, near Ditella, also features hot springs and fumaroles. Nestled along the southern coast, Cala Junco is among the Aeolian Islands’ most attractive bays.
From the village, a trail leads up to Timpone del Corvo (421m), the island’s highest point.
Remains of a prehistoric village on the sickle shaped promontory of Capo Milazzo confirms the inhabitance of Panarea since the Bronze Age.
Panarea can also be discovered from the sea, by boat or raft, the easiest way to reach the uninhabited islets surrounding islands, which offer perfect diving spots for enthusiasts. Most popular dives spots happen around Basiluzzo, near the remains of a Roman building with mosaics, Petra Nave rock and the ship wreck lying between the offshore rocks of Lisca Bianca and Bottaro.

The Faraglioni of Lipari are one of the symbols of the Aeolian Islands.
They are called Pietra Lunga and Pietra Menalda and are classified as “neck”, that is, a volcanic neck that has solidified and are what remains of the volcanic buildings that stopped erupting in ancient times. In the case of time, atmospheric events have eroded their slopes until they disappeared. In the end, the two columns remained, from which you can enjoy an excellent view from the island of Vulcano.

The Capodimonte Museum, located in Naples, contains some of the most important collections of Campania as regards painting, sculptures, decorative arts and weapons. These mainly belong to the Farnese, Bourbon and Savoy collections. It was built inside what was once a wonderful palace surrounded by a well-kept natural park full of greenery.
The structure was built in the eighteenth century by Charles of Bourbon in the hilly area of the Campania capital and was built mainly to house the works of art that Charles of Bourbon had inherited from his mother Elisabetta Farnese.
Since 1957 it has become the home of one of the most important museums in Italy. Inside, the Capodimonte National Museum and Galleries hosted works of medieval and modern art with a wing also dedicated to contemporary art. Certainly one of the most famous collections is certainly that of Porcelains, known all over the world.

Alberobello, in the Itria Valley, is the Apulian destination that has become famous for its Trulli. These houses became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. The most important is the Trullo Sovrano which has become a museum and which was built in the mid-nineteenth century. During the summer it also becomes the perfect location for many cultural shows of various kinds. In addition to the Trullo Sovrano Museum in Alberobello we also find the Casa Pezzolla Territory Museum, where you can retrace the history of this place and its very particular buildings. And a trullo was also used as a church: the Church of Sant’Antonio, at the end of Rione Monti.

Aeolian archipelago’s second largest island, Salina is the greenest and the most fertile, partly covered with vineyards producing the sweet Malvasia wine and capers exported worldwide, that once were preserved with the salt coming from the coastal salt pond near Lingua, hence the island’s name. It’s ancient name was Didyme, meaning twin, for it’s formed by two mountains, actually extinct volcanic craters, Monte dei Porri and Monte Fossa delle Felci, 962m, the Aeolian archipelago’s highest peak.
A popular destination for hikers, the Regional Natural Reserve Montagne delle Felci e dei Porri protects an amazing habitat of pine forests, alder, chestnut trees and lush ferns covering the old crater.
Remains of a fourth century BC settlement inhabited until the Middle Ages stands near Santa Marina Salina, attesting that the island has been populated since ancient times. Actually Salina has always been one of the Aeolian archipelago’s most populated islands, often welcoming other islanders fleeing from their lands in the occurrence of eruptions.
Unlike the other islands, forming together the municipality of Lipari, it’s divided into three separate municipalities. Santa Marina Salina, the main port, lies on a eastern coast beautiful beach. Malfa, on the northern coast, is famous for hosting the Sagra del Cappero (Festival of the Caper), Aeolian Islands’ main produce. Held on the first Sunday of June, the festival is an unmissable opportunity to taste the Aeolian cuisine’s specialties while enjoying music and folklore shows.
n this part of the island you can also find the beautiful Pollara beach, the location of some shootings of famous Il Postino movie. The edge of an ancient crater sunk into the sea, the bay is a popular destination both for swimmers and divers, attracted by the shallow waters and the impressive underwater rock layers which an ideal habitat for a rich marine fauna.
At the foot of Monte Fossa delle Felci, Leni is home to the 17th century Sanctuary of the Madonna del Terzito, the most important Marian shrine in the Aeolian Islands and a pilgrimage site, especially during the festival celebrated on July 23rd with a procession, a party on the main square and fireworks.
