Our freshly planted olive trees are blooming ! Such excitement and soon we will have an irrigation system in place so all the individual trees will have just the right amount of water. The rains these last few months have assisted in their growth, we are aiming to produce garfagnana food and treats.

Florence is a hop, skip and a jump while staying and while there visit the museo degli innocenti in central Florence parts of it were designed by it is off the tourist beaten tract and has stunning artworks as many of the male orphans were encouraged to become apprenticed in painting and sculpture with the great masters. The museum which relates the story of this orphanage started to house the many bastard children of florentine nobility and then grew to house any infant whom could not be looked after by its mother. The infants were placed in a hatch with bars across it which were only large enough to let a new born baby through. They were swaddled with a token from the mother within the swaddling clothes or on a cord around their neck, this gave an inkling as to the natural parents of the infant. Sometimes these tokens helped the mother reclaim her child years later once she could look after it. The putti or child images were done by de la Robbia, who also designed the male infant courtyard. The bar above this museum has a stunning view of Florentine rooftops as seen in our last post.
