Do you know the story of the infamous “Gallo nero” (Black rooster)? The symbol is tied to the historical rivalry between the two cities of Florence and Siena who both wanted to officially claim the Chianti region as their own. To settle the dispute, they decided on a unique challenge – a race by horse between their respective cavaliers at dawn. The crowing of a rooster would signal the starting point, and where the riders met would determine the border.

The Florentines chose a majestic black rooster, while the Sienese opted for a white one. The Florentine rooster was badly-fed and kept in a dark coop, whereas the white rooster was well-fed and had everything it’s heart could desire. On the race day, the black rooster crowed before sunrise as it was happy to be free again, while the white rooster “slept in”. This caused the Florentine knight to leave earlier, and in turn gave Florence a larger share of the Chianti territory.

Today, the Gallo Nero is a symbol for the official Chianti Classico region and wines, reflecting its historical and cultural significance. For this reason, its subtle presence can be seen all across our estate in Starda— look closely to spot this emblem of legacy. 🌟
