The house is on one floor which has a dining room with fireplace, a sitting room with a piano and a sofa bed (double bed). Two bedrooms, a kitchen with veranda, two bathrooms with shower and a cozy terrace. The house faces south and has a splendid panoramic view over the Toiena hills and lake Bolsena. The entrance of the house is from a shared terrace, where you can enjoy an aperitif when you get
back from your sightseeing. A very central position making it easy for the guests to use all services and at the same time living a typical and relaxed atmosphere at the Italian borghi. The water of lake Bolsena is the cleanest in Europe and its sandy and grassy beaches, either free or with sunbeds are just 5 km from Grotte di Castro. Just swimming, sunbathing or sitting under the shade of the trees is very relaxing. There are lots of water sports like rowing, water skiing, sailing, surfing and scuba diving
The speciality of the restaurants around the lake is fish, meat and local products. All served with good wine. In the area there are paths for trekking and mountain bikes (the Francigena path, Natural Riserve Of Monte Rufeno)
Riding and sailing lessons can be taken on the way to Bolsena only 12 Km. The castle of Monaldeschi and the Cathedral of Santa Cristina ( where the miracle of the eucarist came about) are well worth a visit. Just a little bit further, you can find cities rich in art, such as Orvieto ( km 30) Viterbo city of Popes and its thermal baths (km 45) Civita di Bagno Regio (Km 25)...and all of the tuscan Val d'Orcia also with its famous thermal baths of San Casciano ( km 34) and Bagni Filippo (km 44).The thermal baths of Saturnia and Monte Amiata with its ski fields , are about an hour 's drive , as well as the maritime coast Maremma . THE DISTRICT
The "Contrada delle Orchidee" of this medieval borgo offers a beautiful view of the valley. In the Piazza Matteotti, a beautiful example of a renaissance square, you will find the Palazzo Comunale, built in the XVI century by Iacopo Barozzi also known as the Vignola, an architect of the Noble Fanese family, and the old Palazzo del Podestà which now hosts the "Civil Archeologico Museum of popular tradition". This museum describes the life and habits of the Etruscans, explaining the development of this territory between lake Bolsena and the valley of Flora, during the VII and VI century b.C. The museum has organised nature and archaeology walks "Alle scoperte degli Etruschi di Grotta di Castro". Behind the Piazza there is the Church of St.Peter Apostle, commissioned By Matilde di Canossa in the XII century. At the far end of the borgo is the Barocco Basilica of Maria Santissima Del Suffragio. Inside are precious wooden barocco works of art including a statue of colored wood of the Madonna del Suffragio. Every ten years there is a procession for the Madonna which in 2016 falls its fourth hundred anniversary. In 1616 the habitants of Grotte di Castro had a procession to welcome the statue, carried by a cappuccino monk, along Via del Lago, and on this occasion there was an accident and many following the procession fell into a deep hole. The legend says the Madonna made a miracle and they all got saved. Next year 2016 various "festas" have been arranged. During the summer there will be "sagre" and many art and cultural events.
