One of the joys of this time of the year is stumbling upon fields of wild fennel while strolling through the Sicilian countryside. Its delicate fronds sway in the breeze, releasing their enticing aroma into the air.

But wild fennel isn't just a pretty sight or a nice smell. It's also a culinary gem. I love to forage wild fennel and use it to create a mouthwatering pesto that's perfect for dressing my pasta.

It is super simple and fun too. You go for a walk and collect some fennel. When you go home you add garlic, olive oil, pinenuts, salt and black pepper a sprinkle of pecorino cheese and eventually, you dress your pasta or spread it on bread. It is a symphony of flavours that dance on your taste buds with each bite.

Therefore, if you find yourself wandering through the Sicilian countryside, get yourself some wild fennel.

We've been hard at work refreshing our rooms and getting everything ready for our guests. And guess what? The rooms are looking better than ever! Each corner has been lovingly tended to, ensuring a cosy and welcoming retreat for all our visitors.

Our sparkling swimming pool has been cleaned and prepped for endless hours of relaxation and fun in the sun. Speaking of sunshine, the weather here is absolutely beautiful. With clear skies and a gentle breeze, it is the perfect setting for an unforgettable getaway.

WHY VISITING US?
Sometimes, exploring Sicily can feel as a journey through art, and hidden gems like Montevago, just an hour from our villa, unveil the beauty of visual art, in this case street art. Nestled in the Belice Valley, Montevago bore witness to the aftermath of a 1968 earthquake that left only ruins, stones, and mud. Today, the old roads are cleared, sidewalks immaculate, a real testament to resilience. This village is a unique blend of past, present, and future. Amidst the ancient ruins, vibrant murals emerge, breathing new life into the town. Nature's fury destroyed, but human creativity rebuilt, turning Montevago into an open-air museum of hope. Since 1968, the Belice Valley has transformed into a canvas of stories. Montevago, once a casualty of a natural disaster, now stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of people. This is where culture met catastrophe, and the result is awe-inspiring. Don't miss the chance to witness this living history.

Anyone else felt the wind these days? While the coastal town of Marsala dances with the wind, the enchanting inland areas offer a serene escape from the wuthering gusts. Winter's grasp may linger, but I couldn't resist sharing snapshots from my recent countryside stroll. How fortunate we are to have this picturesque landscape right at our doorstep, especially in the embrace of these mild temperatures. WHY VISITING US?

Palermo, part 2!

Still looking for things to do in Palermo during my next visit. And here it is: right by the Royal Palace hides a captivating secret: the Camera delle Meraviglie, or the 'Room of Wonders.' This enigmatic blue chamber, adorned with Arabic inscriptions and designs, remained concealed for centuries behind layers of plaster in a private home. Recently uncovered during routine restoration, its purpose still eludes us.

As I wander through the city centre, I will be on a mission to find Pietro Tramonte's outdoor library on Via Monte Santa Rosalia, just a 10-minute stroll from the Camera delle Meraviglie. It boasts the title of the world's largest al fresco unconventional 'bookstore,' with thousands of volumes lining the street. Books can be picked up or exchanged through a unique barter system. Well, that is another place I want to visit.

WHY VISITING US?

Once again, I find myself head over heels in love with Palermo. For those not in the loop, Palermo is that lively, ever-changing gem on the Mediterranean coast.

Already daydreaming about my next Palermo rendezvous, just a quick couple of days to discover something fresh. In October 2023, they unveiled the shiny new Palermo Marina Yachting, and let me tell you, it does not look like just a marina. It is now home to the biggest musical dancing fountain in all of Italy.

The grand inauguration had the President of the Republic in attendance, making it a night to remember. The fountains are now a nightly spectacle. From Monday to Thursday they can be seen hourly from 7 to 9pm. While during weekends they are in on the fun too, every hour from 8 to 12 pm.

So, that is where I am going to go soon. Who is up for some magic? Who is ready to join me in creating unforgettable memories?

In Italy, the Christmas spirit officially begins on December 8th, with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. It's a day filled with tradition, from adorning the Christmas tree to crafting the nativity scene.

Though rooted in religious significance, commemorating the day Mary was conceived free from original sin, this day unites all of Italy in a national holiday. This year, it also marks the beginning of a long weekend.

Here in Sicily, our towns come alive with festive decorations and processions, honouring the Virgin Mary. It's a time when we gather to prepare and share special dishes that have been part of our heritage. Celebrate the start of the festive season with us!

When you envision Sicily, citrus groves may be the first images that dance in your mind. However, the island's evolving agricultural scene might surprise you! In recent times, Sicily has witnessed a shift, with avocados, mangos, and bananas flourishing in localized pockets. This adaptation is a response to the global climate shifts, and the once-unthinkable sight of tropical fruits now growing in Sicilian landscapes is a testament to farmers embracing change.

This transformation is especially notable in the fertile soil surrounding Mount Etna, where the hot and humid microclimate, coupled with minimal temperature fluctuations between day and night, provides an ideal environment for growing these exotic fruits. Over 40 farmers have embraced this tropical shift, cultivating these fruits across hundreds of hectares, and this phenomenon shows no sign of slowing down.

While Sicily faces challenges such as heat and drought impacting traditional crops, the warming climate has presented an unexpected opportunity. Growers can now profitably cultivate new crops and varieties that were once deemed challenging.
