Let me introduce Santa Maria and Santa Rosalia, two stunning properties to rent in Western Sicily. Those of you who love history will love Santa Maria, a 17th century 'baglio' – fortified farmhouse - that has been in our family for a hundred years. Complete with towers, turrets and battlements, it looks more like a castle than a farmhouse. Originally a monastery, one time commandery for the Knight

s of Malta, later the centre of a flourishing wine business, it is now a private villa offering luxury accommodation for guests seeking the Sicilian experience from a villa immersed in history. We rent out the ground floor of the villa, complete with its own walled orangery and separate Mediterranean garden with a stunning pool for the exclusive use of our guests. And there is more…a tennis court in front of the villa, a shady pine grove, olive groves and a cypress tree avenue leading to a 16th century watch tower. Those of you who have small children will love Santa Rosalia, once the annexe of Santa Maria, now a modern pink stuccoed villa on two floors with a huge Mediterranean garden and its own enchanting swimming pool surrounded by olive trees and lavender. We think Santa Rosalia is truly child/baby-friendly, or rather friendly to the parents! A fence around the swimming pool and a lock to the gate gives you control of access. For parents of children or teenagers, whether you are in the villa or relaxing under the vine-covered pergola, you have a direct view of the pool, close enough to see the action but far enough away to miss out on the noise. Back to babies and toddlers, we have two grandchildren who fit into this category, so we know what guests with small children really need. First of all there is a shallow end of the pool where little ones can stand. Buongiorno! January is when most people start planning their summer holidays. Have you booked yours yet? If you're still looking for somewhere to relax and recharge this summer, we recommend Western Sicily! Yes, ok, we're a little biased, but seriously, what's not to like about the glorious food, the guaranteed sunshine, the tranquil turquoise sea and the general laid-back vibe of this side of the island?

If you're looking for a special place to stay while in Western Sicily, consider Santa Maria. A fortified castle-like property dating back to the 17th century surrounded by beautiful Mediterranean gardens. This the place to come if you're looking for peace and tranquility - the only sounds you'll hear are the crickets and birdsong. And yet, you're a 5-minute drive into the charming town of Mazara del Vallo for your daily dose of Sicilian gelato and your evening seafront stroll. Ancient Greek temples are close by too.
