Villa Romana del Tellaro is a 4th-century Roman villa near Noto, Sicily, renowned for its exquisite mosaic floors. Discovered in the 1970s, the villa's mosaics depict scenes of hunting, banquets, and mythological figures, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship. Though smaller in scale than Villa Romana del Casale, it offers a fascinating glimpse into Roman luxury and artistry.

🏛 The Greek Theatre of Syracuse, built in the 5th century BC, is one of the largest and best-preserved ancient Greek theatres.

💃 It was a major venue for theatrical performances and other public events during the height of the Greek Empire and continues to be so today.

💥 One of the highlights of our June Art Tour of Sicily will be attending the classical tragedy 'Phaedra' at this ancient venue in Syracuse—a truly magical experience

Extraordinary new artefacts are emerging from the ongoing excavations in Pompeii.

The recent excavations in the so-called "Region 9", a large commercial and residential area of the city which until now had never been freed from the meters of ash and rubble that submerged it, have in fact brought to light a "black room" of inestimable value. In particular, a series of frescoes considered among the most refined of the entire site were found inside.

After twenty years of studies, research and restoration, the "Telamon", one of the colossal anthropomorphic statues that supported the architrave of the temple of Zeus has been brought back to an upright position.

The statue, almost 8 meters high, is supported by a 12 meter steel structure to which shelves are anchored where the individual pieces of the reassembled monument are placed.

The temple of Zeus stood as' victory over the Carthaginians after 480 BC. to celebrate the prestige of the tyrant Theron. Architectural solutions never seen before were devised, such as the very high fluted semi-columns, in each of which "a man could comfortably fit" (writes Diodorus Siculus). Of colossal dimensions, just think that it measured approximately 112 x 56 meters (the Parthenon in Athens measures 69.54 x 30.87 m), occupied 6340 m2 and was made of blocks of local calcarenite. With an unusual plan (pseudoperipteroheptastyle, 7 Doric semi-columns on the short sides and 14 on the long sides), with the architrave, composed of three rows of blocks, surmounted by a Doric frieze, the geison and the sima. In the spaces between the columns (intercolumni), about 11 meters high, the monumental statues (telamoni) were positioned in the act of holding a heavy load with their arms.

The conservation status of the countless corpses exposed make the cemetery of the Convent of the Capuchin Friars, known as the Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo, one of the most impressive places to visit in the world.

A macabre spectacle that brings out the uses, customs and traditions of the Palermo society from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century. The last burials are from the 1920s and 1930s. Among the final interments was Rosalisa Lombardo, then nearly two years old, whose body remains remarkably intact.

A unique cultural heritage that in many centuries has attracted and fascinated onlookers from all over the world, including many intellectuals, poets and writers such as Alexandre Dumas, Mario Praz, Guy de Maupassant, F***y Lewald and Carlo Levi.

A place so evocative that did not remain insensitive even Ippolito Pindemonte, who visited the Catacombs of the Capuchins in 1777 and wrote in the verses of his "Sepolcri":

"Death looks at them and it seems to have missed all shots."

I Vespri Siciliani (1864) is a very important work by the Sicilian 19th century artist Michele Rapisardi.

The painting represents the scene in which a French soldier offends a Palermitan woman, thus causing a popular revenge, the people's revolt known as "I Vespri Siciliani," which brought to an end the Angioin domination in 1282.

The painting is housed in Castello Ursino (Catania) and it is a must see of our Sicily Art Tour.

Photo number 1 os a study for the major painting, also on display. What a beautiful rendition! 😍

🏚️ In the heart of Sicily lies a profound reminder of nature's power and art's resilience: the Cretto di Burri. This massive land art project by Alberto Burri covers the ruins of the old town of Gibellina, devastated by the tragic Belice Earthquake in 1968.

🌍 The earthquake, which struck the region of Belice, led to the complete destruction of several towns. Amidst this devastation, Alberto Burri saw an opportunity to fuse memory and art, creating one of the most significant land artworks in the world.

🎨 The Cretto, also known as "The Great Crack", is a vast concrete representation of the streets and homes lost in the earthquake. This stark, white labyrinth serves as a poignant memorial, turning the scars of the past into a canvas for reflection and remembrance.

Known as the 'good witch of Christmas', La Befana presides over the feast of the Epiphany on January 6th. In fact, her name comes from the Italian word for the Epiphany; 'epifania'. Making her journey on January 5th, she rides atop a broom and climbs down the chimney of homes to deliver presents to the children inside.
