Proviene dal tardo latino “Locus Rotundus”, luogo rotondo.
Già nella prima metà del XIII secolo, in ragione del suo accrescersi alla sommità di un colle racchiuso nella sua cinta muraria, il borgo assume quella forma circolare che gli ha dato il nome e che appare anche nella cartografia dei secoli successivi.
