⚜️ The historic Tonnara in Scopello near Palermo is one of the stops on our tour of Western Sicily. The tonnara is one of the most important and oldest ones in Sicily: the first buildings date back to the 13th century; the proper tonnara was built in the 15th century by Giovanni Sanclemente and enlarged by the Sanclemente family during the 16th century. Later it passed to the Society of Jesus and finally to the Florio family. In the last years, the Tonnara becomes popular with tourists from all over the world, especially since the location became the backdrop of some international movies and tv series productions.

⚜️ The Fountain of Diana (Fontana di Diana) is in the center of Piazza Archimede in Syracuse on the east coast of Sicily. It is also known as the Fountain of Artemis, as the original Greek name for the Roman goddess Diana was Artemis.

⚜️ The fountain was created by Giulio Moschetti in 1907 using reinforced concrete.

⚜️ The fountain includes a triton and a mermaid with a child on her lap riding sea monsters, and also includes Arethusa and Alpheus (Diana is helping Arethusa to escape unwanted attention from Alpheus, who fell in love with her after seeing her bathing n**e in a stream).

⚜️ Anelletti al forno (lit. ‘baked anelletti’) or timballo di anelletti are a type of baked pasta called pasta al forno typical of Palermo and its province. Chef Alessandro grew up eating this type of pasta and it’s one of his favourite to make.

⚜️ Anelletti can be found in commercial establishments, restaurants, diners, fryers, and bars with delicatessens, but they are also consumed as a family dish especially on holidays because of the long preparation required.

⚜️ The pasta used to prepare baked pasta dishes are anelletti (ring-shaped pasta) of about one centimeter and with a thickness similar to bucatini. At the base of this dish is a particular ragù similar to the one from Bologna, which in the Palermo area is almost always made with the addition of peas. Among the many variants of this way of preparation, some of them include the use of ham, hard-boiled egg in the inner stuffing, others use mozzarella cheese, and still others pecorino cheese.

⚜️ This pasta “cake” is usually covered with thin slices of fried eggplants, topped with breadcrumbs! Learn how to make this easy and fantastic pasta dish with Chef Alessandro in Sicily! Sign up for a culinary tour directly on our website!

⚜️ A Dazzling Eruption of Lava Spews Out of Mount Etna for The Past 4 Days! Clouds of ash went nearly 15,000 feet into the air, and the airport in Catania, Sicily, was forced to shut down because the runway was unusable. Bright lava erupted from the volcano, trailing down the mountain, as a thick plume of smoke filled the sky and left streets covered in ash.

⚜️ Earlier this week, activity also intensified at Stromboli, a volcano nearby in the Aeolian Islands, with huge clouds of ash and debris falling into the sea.

⚜️ Salvatore Cocina, head of Sicily’s civil protection department, said that the authorities were evaluating the possibility that large amounts of lava falling into the sea from the Stromboli volcano could cause a tsunami.
He said that boats for day trippers had been halted and that the Italian Navy was ready to carry out evacuations if necessary. So far, there have been no reports of any injuries.

⚜️ Stromboli and Mount Etna are active and regularly erupt, but they are experiencing a particularly high level of activity, said Claudio Peri, an inspector with Sicily’s firefighters. Marco Neri, an Italian volcanologist, said that the crater from which the lava fountain burst out of Etna had been dormant for about four years but began erupting about two weeks ago, culminating in the explosion on Thursday. He added that the cloud of ash had reached nearly 15,000 feet, with winds then sending the plume over surrounding towns.

⚜️ The mayor of the Sicilian port city of Catania, Enrico Trantino, on Friday banned the riding of motorcycles there for two days because of the risks related to the presence of ash, and he set a speed limit of about 20 miles an hour for cars.

⚜️ The runway at the Catania airport became unusable on Friday because of the volcanic ash, the airport posted on social media, adding that arrivals and departures were suspended until at least the afternoon on the 5th of July.

⚜️ Locals and tourists have been enjoying the spectacular views and volcanic tours with an expert volcanologist guide are still happening!

⚜️ Would you like to learn how to easily prepare fresh sourdough bread with us in Sicily?

⚜️ Yesterday we tested a new recipe from the - with the addition of miso, tahini & sesame for flavour, but made with local Sicilian Semolina hard wheat and 20% indigenous Sicilian Tumminia whole wheat! The flavours are divine! Locals in Palermo always top their breads with sesame, a tradition left from the times of the Arab domination.
