👉 Church of Saint Jacques de la Lande – Alvaro Siza Vieira

In Rennes, France, architect Álvaro Siza Vieira has crafted the Church of Saint-Jacques-de-la-Lande, a bold exploration of concrete geometry. Rising 12 meters, the structure’s board-formed, reinforced white concrete echoes the materiality of the surrounding residential blocks, seamlessly blending modern design with its urban context.

Set on a square plan, the church features a central cylindrical volume flanked by four rectangular towers of equal height. Minimalist elements like a discreet canopy at the entrance and a cantilevered semi-cylinder at the rear reinterpret traditional church forms.

Inside, daylight floods the all-white interior, where white concrete and off-white marble create a serene atmosphere. Bespoke wooden furnishings provide warmth against the clean, sculptural surfaces. Siza’s restrained yet powerful use of concrete and light transforms the space into a timeless sanctuary of modern spirituality.
