The Arizona in Italy program works in collaboration with the University of Arizona and is an institution fully accredited by the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research (Ministero dell'Istruzione, dell'Università e della Ricerca - MIUR). It offers study abroad programming for spring, summer and fall semesters, with a broad variety of courses, including the possibility to join an Archaeological excavation. There will be field trips, museum visits and independent study programs.

Prof. Sandra Barr was awarded her Ph D. in Forgery in Classical art restoration in 2009, and that is one of her many many interests! She teaches Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque and Eighteenth-century European art. In 2021 she lectured at Cornell University on the iconography and ceremonial use of Southwestern Native American art. Students love to learn from her!

Kate Alexander is an Associate Professor of Practice in the W.A. Franke Honors College.
She is an ethnomusicologist specializing in the intersections of race, gender, and sexuality in North American social dance communities. Her current research focuses on American LGBTQ country western dance and rodeo networks. In framing issues of gender, whiteness, and place phenomenologically, Dr. Alexander investigates how the diffuse LGBTQ country western community creates meaning, coherence, and sociality for its participants, with implications for larger questions of race, class, and regionalism in contemporary America. She teaches interdisciplinary courses on sound, music, visual art, and culture. You’ll love her!

Richard Poss is an Associate Professor in the Astronomy Department and a former director of the University of Arizona's undergraduate Humanities Program. Among our youngest instructors, Lydia Paar is an essayist, developmental editor, and writing instructor. Alexander Chee selected her essay, “Erasure,” as the 2020 winner of North American Review’s Terry Tempest Williams Creative Nonfiction Prize. She holds an MFA in Creative Nonfiction from Washington University, an MA in Fiction from Northern Arizona University, and a BA in Writing & Cultural Studies from Prescott College. Dr. Friesen is Director of Graduate Studies for Classics at the University of Arizona, after teaching in the Faculty of Theology and Religion at the University of Oxford. Taking his two courses in Orvieto- Greek and Roman Religion, and Introduction to the Bible-New Testament, you will discover interesting intersections of Greek literature with the religious worlds of ancient Jews and Christians.

Our Story

The Arizona in Orvieto program is located in the beautiful, quaint town of Orvieto, just one hour north of Rome and approximately two hours south of Florence. Started in 2002 by Prof. David Soren, Regents Professor at the UA, it has soon become one of the most popular Study Abroad Programs at the UA. Students can join for the Spring, Summer or Fall semester, taking a variety of courses taught by both UA and Italian faculty, including Archaeology, Anthropology, Architecture, Art History, Classics, Communication, English, Italian, Photojournalism, Psychology, Studio Art.
